Hi,

My drummer had a pair of A customs a few years back and liked them. He needs to replace 2 crashes now, 16" and 18".

And is divided between going back to the A's or trying out the sabians for first time.

We do not have a chance to hear them in person.. :|

So if anyone could compare the 2, most importantly for heavier music, so can get an idea on the diferences between them.

Cheers!

everyones ears are deferent, but for me i'd pick the A customs over the aax's. some of the aax's aren't to bad but there arn't any of them i'd consider next to an A custom.

it may be a guitar center thing, but i think i've see a package with the A customs where if you get a 16 and 18" crash they'd throw in some kind of splash.

There are two problems with your request.

1) Cymbals, even two exactly the same, do not sound exactly the same. Because of modern production methods, they will sound similar. Not true of hand hammered cymbals. They can vary quite a bit.

2) Even if all 18" A custom medium crashes sounded identical, words cannot adequately describe how they sound.

If you want good sounding cymbals, you go to a store with a lot of them, try them all, and buy the best ones. You ignore brand, model etc., and only judge by the sound. Sabians and Zildjians are very similar sounding. Makes sense since Sabian used to be the Canadian branch of Zildjian. I cannot tell the difference in those two brands just by listening, and I have been playing Zildjian As for over 40 years.

Hi,

Well i asked for known diferences, because i do not have the oportunity to try them out.

Rca - if u've been playin for 40 years and you can't name 1 sonic diference between to diferent models of cymbals..

Maybe you never tried the sabians, i dunno.

Im a guitarist, even i can tell the diference between an Acustom 16" and a Zcustom 16"..

All i want to know is some good or bad aspects about both series, and if possible, how they compare. There must be some diference? (Brightness, Harshness, Decay, Feel, Durability, Ability to be heard through a mix etc..)

Cheers!

AAX and A Customs....both sound great and I don't see how you could go wrong with either.

My only concern is that you want heavy crashes. Heavier crashes such as the Metal Sabian sound clunky to my ears. I guess they'd work okay for heavier music if you want volume but they seem to sound like poo if you wanna play anything dynamic or soft.

I think the differences you are mostly concerned about (Brightness, Harshness, Decay, Feel, Durability, Ability to be heard through a mix etc..) are gonna be do to the weight of the cymbal. Heavier cymbals sound brighter, harsher, have less decay, the feel has less give, and are louder. Durability is debatable and I have little experience with this because I've never broken or cracked a cymbal (damn, knock on wood). Some guys say a heavier crash will crack easier because there is less give when you strike it...I'm not sure if this is true or not.

If your drummer is happy with heavier cymabls, then disregard just about everthing I've said. ;)

Well, he does like heavier cymbals, but to a certain extent.

For example, he doesn't like the harshness of the Zildjian Z series.

Do you think the sabian aax's are closer to the zildjianZ's than zildjian Acustoms?

By the way, this will be for recording most importantly. Anybody had recording experiences with aax/aa sabian crashes?

Cheers
