Members drmrdude
I am thinking about getting a new kit. I dont like "standard" or "fusion" size drums. So I am looking at the Ludwig Vistalite Bonham kit. What does everyone think bout the vistalites. I tried one of them at the store just sort of tap-tap and it sounded real good. Except the bass drum just didnt seem right. I like a real big kick with a buttload of attack. Would I be able to get a good sound out of the kick. Also those toms are soo big and deep. And the clear acrylic orange. Oooooo sooo sexy.
Members SublimeOi
for me i would LOVE that kit, because i like big toms, big bass drums and everything... i think the bass drum could sound really good, it probably just wasnt tuned right... if you dont like the vistalite, they have another bonham kit with the exact same sizes and they are maple, you can get them in natural finish or black marine pearl

Moderators BATCAT Posted February 9, 2005 Moderators Share Posted February 9, 2005 In my experience Vistalites sound a little cold and harsh acoustically but are GREAT stage kits, really punchy.

Members Tobio!
Vistalites are cool. The sound is OK, a bit cold and short. The shells have very little resonance. This is most notable on the kick drum. I have a 24" kick and it just doesn't put out quite enough "ooomph". I've never been happy with the Vistalite snare sound. It sounds boxy and dead. For a live situation they're OK, but I would never record with them.

I have noticed the same characteristics. I have owned two Ludwig kits with 26" bass drums. Then I realised after many years that as much as I emulate him, I am NOT John Bonham. Besides that I couldn't set the kit up to where the drums were most comfortable So now I have another Ludwig kit with a 22x16 bass drum and it works for me. So I guess my advice to drmrdude would be to try out all your options thoroughly and be sure of your decision before you plunk down all your savings. (oops as much ass thats a pretty hilarious typo unless you share a cell with Bubba...)

Members evhtone
I love big drums, too! The Vistalites are very nice drums, but they are different than maple drums. They are considerabley louder and not as warm as the maples. I still may get a set in the future.
