I also do not recommend dampening cymbals in any way because it {censored}s up the sound worse than muffling drums.

For recording/practice, using lighter cymbals is a good idea. Use those heavy cymbals for playing with a full band.

I am also very aware that money does not grow on trees :( so buying new cymbals might not be an option.

I suggest you go out and lay down a couple grand for a good electronic kit. That way you have complete volume control at the twist of a knob.;) Seriously, it's like everyone else said - it's all about dynamics and control.

Also, try mounting your cymbals lower and angled towards you rather than high/flat, so you're not hitting the edge but rather the top surface.

Sticking a couple of tapes won't kill the sound. I recommend using painter's tape to avoid sticky residues.

So how do you do it?

I'd stick some tapes just outside the edge of the bell making a circular pattern. The amount of tape depends how much you want to dampen your cymbal, so start with one circular pattern at a time. It will actually make the sound decays faster and darker.
