Members ned911 Posted July 20, 2005 Members Posted July 20, 2005 My drummer is from Nigeria and has not had the opportunity to hear many of the great drummers of the 60's and 70's. I want to put together a CD of songs he should learn just to build his chops or are just songs every drummer should know. Here is what I have so far and any other suggestions would be appreciated. Rock N Roll - ZepRock N Roll All Night - KissSomething from Rush - make suggestion Sunshine of Your Love or something else from CreamWon't Get Fooled Again - or other WhoOther Led Zep
Members Ignited Posted July 20, 2005 Members Posted July 20, 2005 Throw a few Beatle's songs in there.
Members Camel Posted July 20, 2005 Members Posted July 20, 2005 How about Paranoid - Sabbath. Some Hendrix, perhaps Fire. Or Manic Depression, I love the drums in that track.
Members gcdrummer Posted July 20, 2005 Members Posted July 20, 2005 Don't throw all crazy stuff in there...he'll need to groove too. Shook me all night long, AC/DC50 ways to leave your lover, Paul SimonRosanna, TotoRoxanne, The PoliceDon't you forget about me, Simple MindsKick start my heart, Motley CrueDon't tell me you love me, Night RangerSeperate ways and Don't stop believing, Journey Any number of 80's glam songs...and tell him everyone in the states can play 6:00 by Dreamtheater. As I look back over your post, I see you asked for 60's and 70's drummers...duh! Oh well, I'll post this anyway.
Members Snake Posted July 20, 2005 Members Posted July 20, 2005 Other Zeppelin songs (and they're all pretty easy...if I can play them, they must be): Communication Breakdown, Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid, Since I've Been Loving You, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, When the Levee Breaks, The Ocean.
Members Lysakoski Posted July 20, 2005 Members Posted July 20, 2005 Communication Breakdown - Led Zeppelin By-Tor And The Snow Dog - Rush I'm A Mover - Free Young Man Blues (Live At Leeds) - The Who Bombs Away - The Police Stargazer - Rainbow Still Raining, Still Dreaming - Jimi Hendrix Exp Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin Tempus Fugit - Yes ...{censored} it... Angel Of Death - Slayer
Members HottKarl Posted July 20, 2005 Members Posted July 20, 2005 Anything off of "1984." Nothing flashy there but Alex Van Halen is THE reason I got into drums. 4/4 power drumming at it best....IMO. *EDIT* +1 on Angel of Death.

Members ned911 Posted July 20, 2005 Author Members Posted July 20, 2005 Great list thank you. Love the 80's Glam but in the guitar forums that usually starts a flame war. Might be a 2 disc set at this point.
Members Jessz1 Posted July 21, 2005 Members Posted July 21, 2005 Ahem... 50 ways to leave your lover. Classic.Four sticks, Zep, he never uses his snare and it still is one of the most powerfull songs ever.Hot for teacher VH... just one of them songs that boggle drummers to this dayTom Sawyer, Peart at his best.
Members hans-jürgen Posted July 25, 2005 Members Posted July 25, 2005 Originally posted by ned911 Rock N Roll - Zep Sunshine of Your Love or something else from Cream Other Led Zep I'll second that, John Bonham is one of my favorite drummers ever, Ginger Baker's totally different and maybe easier for an african drummer to learn (but a huge problem for others... ), but I have to ask where's Frank Beard in that list? "La Grange", "Heard it on the X", "Manic Mechanic" might keep your drummer busy for the next few days. And please post some clips with your new band somewhere...

Members Dyzio Posted August 24, 2005 Members Posted August 24, 2005 definetly put my generation by the who and i put in moby dick from zeppelin. theres a lot a hand drums in there.
Members Kiwiburger Posted August 24, 2005 Members Posted August 24, 2005 Ian Paice's drumming in the Machine Head album blows me away - the intro to Pictures of Home ... Ringo's drum tone, feel and taste blows me away too. Abbey Road is a bit of a show case - even now that I know he stole that entire drum solo note for note from Inna Gadda Da Vida If this guy is from Nigeria, maybe he could teach us a thing or two about rythmn ...
