My drummer is from Nigeria and has not had the opportunity to hear many of the great drummers of the 60's and 70's. I want to put together a CD of songs he should learn just to build his chops or are just songs every drummer should know.

Here is what I have so far and any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Rock N Roll - Zep

Rock N Roll All Night - Kiss

Something from Rush - make suggestion

Sunshine of Your Love or something else from Cream

Won't Get Fooled Again - or other Who

Other Led Zep

How about Paranoid - Sabbath.

Some Hendrix, perhaps Fire. Or Manic Depression, I love the drums in that track.

Don't throw all crazy stuff in there...he'll need to groove too.

Shook me all night long, AC/DC

50 ways to leave your lover, Paul Simon

Rosanna, Toto

Roxanne, The Police

Don't you forget about me, Simple Minds

Kick start my heart, Motley Crue

Don't tell me you love me, Night Ranger

Seperate ways and Don't stop believing, Journey

Any number of 80's glam songs...and tell him everyone in the states can play 6:00 by Dreamtheater.

As I look back over your post, I see you asked for 60's and 70's drummers...duh! Oh well, I'll post this anyway.

Other Zeppelin songs (and they're all pretty easy...if I can play them, they must be): Communication Breakdown, Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid, Since I've Been Loving You, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, When the Levee Breaks, The Ocean.

Anything off of "1984." Nothing flashy there but Alex Van Halen is THE reason I got into drums. 4/4 power drumming at it best....IMO.

*EDIT* +1 on Angel of Death. :D

Great list thank you. Love the 80's Glam but in the guitar forums that usually starts a flame war.

Might be a 2 disc set at this point.

Ahem... 50 ways to leave your lover. Classic.

Four sticks, Zep, he never uses his snare and it still is one of the most powerfull songs ever.

Hot for teacher VH... just one of them songs that boggle drummers to this day

Tom Sawyer, Peart at his best.

I'll second that, John Bonham is one of my favorite drummers ever, Ginger Baker's totally different and maybe easier for an african drummer to learn (but a huge problem for others... ;) ), but I have to ask where's Frank Beard in that list? "La Grange", "Heard it on the X", "Manic Mechanic" might keep your drummer busy for the next few days. :) And please post some clips with your new band somewhere...

Space Truckin', Fireball (Deep Purple), 2112 Overture (Rush), Hair of the Dog (Nazareth), American Band, Aimless Lady (Grand Funk), The Real Me, Won't Get Fooled Again (the Who), Ballroom Blitz, Sweet F.A. (Sweet), Walk This Way, Adam's Apple (Aerosmith), Alright Now, Wishing Well (Free), Tie Your Mother Down, Sheer Heart Attack (Queen), Honky Tonk Woman, Sympathy for the Devil, Gimme Shelter (the Rolling Stones)

My Sharona - The Knack

We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister (opening)

I know it has bee said, but I have to say:

When the Levee Breaks, The Ocean - The Mighty Zepplin

Sexy MF - Prince and the Revolution

Brick House - The Commodores

Fairies Wear Boots - Sabbath

Cold and Ugly - Tool

Once he gets a hold of the essentials I would suggest anything from The Mars Volta. Mindbending to say the least.

Ian Paice's drumming in the Machine Head album blows me away - the intro to Pictures of Home ...

Ringo's drum tone, feel and taste blows me away too. Abbey Road is a bit of a show case - even now that I know he stole that entire drum solo note for note from Inna Gadda Da Vida :)

If this guy is from Nigeria, maybe he could teach us a thing or two about rythmn ...
