transform Pearl Rhythm Traveler into electronic. NO CLUE. Me = nOOb

Hey there everyone!

I am moving into another apartment soon and was going to set up my Pearl Rhythm Traveler back up with the mesh heads. The other day I was at the music store, and was messing around with some of the electric drum sets they had set up (Yamaha DTX express and Roland HD1) and thought that it was pretty awesome that you can actually hear the sound with minimal noise. I remembered a while ago that a few people talked about transforming the Rhythm Traveler into an electronic set. Problem is, I am an absolute nOOb with almost no experience with drum parts, electronic drum parts, etc.

Basically, my question is what are the exact items I am going to need to create an electronic set out of the Pearl, about how much, and generally how I can do it.

There are several good tips on www.vdrums.com in the DIY section, you can pick up the Pintech conversion pack if you want something pre-made/professional, or you can use external triggers on your mesh heads.

If you get time, look around my website www.hopedrums.com I have a section in there that shows Roland, Pintech and Hart drums that are taken apart so you can see the inside, this may help you in your project!

Here are some sites I used when converting my kit. I pretty much used the Beatnik triggers (including the HH module) when I triggered my Rhythm Traveler. Works great with a Roland TD-8 and TD-3. If you have a TD-7, look elsewhere. (If you are scratching your head about the large cymbals, those are old as dirt Pintech Zenbals. They sucked and have since been replaced. I acutally gig with this kit quite often (see avatar).

The Piezos and 1/4" connectors can be found cheap at Rat Shack, Mouser or Digikey.

Learn how to solder!

Hey there! Thanks for the pics! Looks awesome and like exactly what I'm looking for! So basically, all I need are triggers, wires for the module, the module itself, and special pads for the cymbals?

Also, you said learn to solder. I've tried many times. I'm HORRID. Do I absolutely have to solder anything? If anything, I don't mind paying some cash for things because I most likely will botch it up.

I was looking at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320227588592&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching for triggers. Could I just order those, some wires, the module, and be set?

Yep, those would work, but you can build them yourself for about $2.50 each, and mount them internally. I'm unsure how the ones you are looking at on ebay are rigged on the mesh heads. They look to be surface mount triggers which may not attach well on the mesh heads since adhesive does not work so well on mesh, but I'm not sure. You still have the issue of the Hi-Hat controller and e-cymbals, but at least the rim triggers are a start.

edited to add: check out this guys auctions. He makes this stuff himself and has excellent feedback. It looks like all of the soldering is done for you, plus the triggers are adjustable to offset hot-spot triggering issues. He makes triggers and a hi-hat conversion too. Worth a look at least...
