Members boomboomdrums Posted February 20, 2012 Members Posted February 20, 2012 Has anyone ever heard of this cat? I stumbled across this video on youtube the other day. I had never heard of him before then. It's Danny playing with Louis Armstrong in 1959. Danny does a solo and tears it up. One interesting part of it I thought was that you can hear the Stompin' at the Savoy melody in his solo. Good stuff. Thought you fellow drummers might enjoy it. I know I did. Members Dendy Jarrett Posted November 12, 2014 Members Posted November 12, 2014 I just had a guy who stumbled across this post who was friends with Danny. He says: "Just to let you know that I personally knew Danny when I stationed in Yokohama Navy base in 1953. Danny formed his own band, The Hawaiian Dixieland All-Stars, which toured in Japan and the Hawaiian islands. He played in a night club near the base and would listen to the band almost every night. As a drummer and six months younger than Danny I learned much from that fine group. I had the pleasure of sitting in his band but was no match to his talent. That being said, he instilled the drive to improve. Today I back a 17 pc. swing band with great joy, what memories." Way cool! It is amazing given the weight and caliber of the gear at that time, that they were able to do what they did. Simpler times. D
