Members megadan Posted May 16, 2005 Members Posted May 16, 2005 I know this has been asked a million billion times before... but give me the straight dope... I have a 210 all ready... I want some big, deep, low, loud, booming, freakin', BASS So what's going to give me the best volume and low end? I heard that the 115 cab doesn't have enough volume to use the 15" as well, and the 12's are better for that reason. On the other hand, I've never used 12's before, and I have a 15" BW equiped Peavey that makes just the noise I wanna hear. Mostly what's making me think is this thread: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=871836&highlight=115+AND+212 But the best part is, Avatar speakers now has a Canadian dealer! Whoo hoo! So as soon as I sell off some old g****r gear I'll be getting a new cab... ($409 shipped for the 15, $473 for the 12)
Members Thunderbroom Posted May 16, 2005 Members Posted May 16, 2005 I have a 210/115 Avatar setup. I like it a bunch. I find it to be way too much for a gig for the most part though and usually use one cab or the other.
Members L-1329 Posted May 16, 2005 Members Posted May 16, 2005 The beauty of the B212 is that it has HUGE bass and a better ability to project some perceptable volume than a 115 will. I play fives mostly, and the B212 has no problem at all delivering the big powerful lows you are describing. It's a great cab for the money, and I would choose that over the 115 every time. I have become a 212 convert because of this cab, you will not be disappointed.
Members SpaceGhost Posted May 16, 2005 Members Posted May 16, 2005 I'd go with the 1x15. My Neo 2x10 (just got here today biznatch) sounds great when coupled with my Marshall 1x15.
Members leepmeister Posted May 16, 2005 Members Posted May 16, 2005 Having never played either cab configuration... I'd say 2x12 Actually I guess I've used some combos with just a 15"... didn't like 'em much, never owned one.
Members mlwarriner Posted May 16, 2005 Members Posted May 16, 2005 i've run 2x2x12 and 4x10, 2x12...never run a 15 with any other cab, just 2x15 cabs. i would strongly reccommend the 2x10, 2x12 setup. i've fallen in love with 12" speakers. they go deep like a 15, and don't get muddy. my current setup is an avatar 2x12 and an ampeg 4x10 running from a trace v6, and it's like pure sex the tone that comes from those cabs... my $.01, FWIW

BTW, go with the 212.
Members megadan Posted May 17, 2005 Author Members Posted May 17, 2005 I shoulda made a poll... but the 212 is looking pretty good... I might take the plunge. James, go to http://www.steamcomusic.com to get in on the action!

Members Markee Posted May 17, 2005 Members Posted May 17, 2005 I love my Avatar 15 cab but I play more old school stuff. I weighed the two at the point of purchase and decided on the 1x15 but it comes down to personal preference, and, you can't go wrong either way.
Members chris dax Posted May 18, 2005 Members Posted May 18, 2005 you can order them both and A/B them, returnig the one you don't like for just the price of shipping....c-d
Members megadan Posted May 18, 2005 Author Members Posted May 18, 2005 Ack...someday I'll figure this out... I like chris's suggestion but I don't think I have the kind of cash lying around to do that! We shall see what happens...

Members shaffle Posted May 18, 2005 Members Posted May 18, 2005 I don't know what the thread starter has for power, but I'd take the B212 without second thought. That cab is rated for 1000W and is also excellent as a standalone. Great low end and great for low Bs. I don't know which 210 you have, but if its an Avatar its rated at nothing less than 700W. The B115 is what? 300W? C'mon! Your setup will be much more practical with the 210 over 212 (or 212 alone). I'll add that I own and gig the B210P over B212 and power them with a QSCRMX1450. The B212 alone is more than suitable for anything that I've done (or can imagine doing) and when topped with the B210 it borders on outrageous.
Members megadan Posted May 18, 2005 Author Members Posted May 18, 2005 Opps, I guess I should have mentioned that I'll be powering the cabs with an SWR 350. I'm buying into the 12" hype, so... better start saving my pennies :D
Members Sixgun77 Posted May 18, 2005 Members Posted May 18, 2005 12's have nicer midrange, but I'd prefer the 15 for shaking the place.

I was having a lot of consternation about the 2x12 vs. 1x15 a year ago. Then my need for cabs vanished. Now I am looking into it again and it is looking like there are more people on the 2x12 side. That said, I seem to remember someone saying something about 2x12 projecting more bass while a 1x15 spread it out more. It was what I think some call a
Members Sixgun77 Posted May 18, 2005 Members Posted May 18, 2005 They both have different "voices" too. I'm going to guess that your 2 12's will punch a little better but if you really want to throw some 60Hz and below I'd go with a bigger speaker if you want those lows(not low mid mind you) to be loud and clean.

My first cabinet was an ACME low B2 (2x10). I have yet to hear a speaker that goes lower than that thing did. Two things wrong with it though: It took gobs of power, and it was stolen... The only thing keeping it away now is that I am under the impression that the Avatar gives far more bang for the buck. edit: all I've ever played is five string.
Members megadan Posted May 28, 2005 Author Members Posted May 28, 2005 Aaaaaack I can't decide what I want... I sold my old amp, so now I have the cash... what to do with it?? Do I want a- Peavey 115BVX (~ $500 new)- Avatar 115 ($420 new)- Avatar 212 ($480 new)- Peavey 118 ($200 used)- Traynor YT-15 2x15 (?(ebay) ~$500)- Ampeg SVT 410 (?(ebay) ~$500)- Peavey 410TX (?ebay) ~$400) Those are all the options avaliable to me right now... they all cost roughly the same amount, except the Peavey 118 would only be about 200 (used, and local). ACk!
Members mahatma Posted May 29, 2005 Members Posted May 29, 2005 I play a Highway 1 Jazz Bass into an Ashdown Mag300H into an Avatar B212. At a recent gig we had a guy sit in with us playing guitar and singing. He has played for many moons in many bands and he was quite impressed with my rig, especially the clarity of the low notes. Now, it was a smallish room and I was turned up only around 4 on the master volume, but I must agree with him that the 2x12 was better 'focused' than some of the 1x15 combos that I have heard in the same venue.
Members timmerz Posted May 29, 2005 Members Posted May 29, 2005 Beam, you're referring to the Whappo Grande, aren't you.... I almost shat myself the first time I came across that big boy.... http://www.accugroove.com/
