So a guy around here is offering this for sale: "garnet lil rock bass cabinet"

it's a "pretty big bass guitar tube amplifier."

he also says it's broken, " it needs two new tubes and a new transistor thingy"

He wants $100 for it.

What do you guys think? Cool deal? Got any info on the amp?

Yeah... I asked him what tubes were needed...

I dunno what he means by transistor thingy (power supply transformer??)

But I think I'll go have a look at it...

He could mean the output transformer (if he ever ran it without a load)...

FYI, Gar Gillies (Garnet) made the Lil' Rock amp in 2 different configurations. As a combo with the amp and speaker all in one cabinet, and as a piggy back unit with a separate head and cabinet.

The combo version was the most common version and came with a single 12" speaker. The standalone Lil' Rock cabinet also came with a single 12" speaker in it.

I seem to recall, the Lil' Rock head was rated around 25-35 watts RMS. Gar made it to compete with Traynors YBA-2A Bass Mate (another fine Canadian) tube amp.

For what it's worth, Garnet Amps were made in Winnipeg.

Thanks... I knew about the Winnipeg thing... cool :D

but wow... that's not much wattage compared to these days... ;):D

I was thinking about running an Ox style rig and cranking my highs through it...

Features?!?!

I don't need no stinkin' features!

Power

30 watts

Dimensions

27" W X 20" H X 10" D

These were neat little amps.

They have some collectibility.

They don't really DO a lot, being '30w'. (which is a stretch for a 2x6v6 amp. While it is true that 15w is the max a 6v will but out, it's rare that an amp actually produces that much. Many builders find it easir to just write down the max rather than actually measure it...) These are a fine 'bedroom amp', but really nothing more.

In it's present condition it's not worth anywhere near a hundred.

You could completely retube it for around $50.

NB: While the guy SAID it needs a transistor, it's not true as these don't have any to begin with. So, it woiuld be a transformer; MUCH more expensive!

If the thing powers up, it's not the power transformer. This leaves the OPxfmr.

A 30w push-pull OPT will probably run around 100 bucks. That is, IF you can find one to fit...

So, the question is this: Do you want to invest ~$350 in this thing?

($100 original price

+$50 tubes

+$100 transformer

+$50 parts shipping

+$50 service (unless you can install it yourself?)
