Members zachoff Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 Yeah, I play with both but not at the same time. Nuts.
Members sunburstbasser Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 16th notes for four minutes? Sounds like the extended version my college combo does of Tower of Power's "What Is Hip?" We take it faster than ToP too. Its not very tough using fingers, just fast.
Members ToeJamFootball Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 i used to be in a mostly covers band, so i played for the song, if i was playing something that needed a pick i would, and yeah, i still flip to the pick for some songs, some songs just dont feel right unless your playing with a pick. Members Texas Noise Factory Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I've written a few riffs using this technique. I use the pick between thumb and first, and then pop or play finger style with the ring and pinky... just for certain accents, and/or notes... gives them a different feeling than picking the note. In my RAWK band, I play mostly with a pick. If I play over a DJ, or with dance music, I play fingerstyle... I use a different methodology too really... It's good to know others do this too really...
Members TheDude15k Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I do that sometimes. its actually a pretty interesting way to play, but since i usually use the pick most of the time its ideal for me when i play the whole note basslines where i want a fat round sound with no bite to it.
Members Adrenochrome Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 My preference will always be fingerstyle, but I'll use a pick when required. Probably about 3/4 fingerstyle, 1/4 pick at the moment. I'm trying out for a rock covers band on sunday and I'll use a pick for every song if it suits the material.

Members narcolepticbass Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I use a Herco thumbpick and switch quite a bit between fingers and pick even in the same riff sometimes. I hate that they wear out pretty fast though. I wish Dunlop would make it with the Gator Grip material in 1mm or 1.2mm thickness
Members Gruven Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 Every bass player should learn to use a pick and his fingers. I'm a finger style player for the most part, but some songs require the picked sound. Play what the song calls for. Originally posted by DerekDRP Pick's are for guitard's not us bass playa's Derek, you need to learn to play (period) before you're qualified to make comments like that.
Members mike fitzwell Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 Definitely learn to use both! I played 100% pick for the first 7 years I played bass. Then one day I decided to learn fingerstyle. Fast forward 5 years to today and I play fingerstyle 99% of the time. But when it comes time to kick into some good ol' 80s rock the pick comes out every time.
Members s4001 Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I learned to play a sweep style like Geddy and that evolved into using my index finger like a pick. It's actually more accurate and faster than the sweep style. The nail on my index finger got stronger from the abuse so now it sounds just like a pick. Easy to switch from both styles bar to bar. So, no, I don't use a pick, but it sometimes looks like it. The g*tarist in my band was looking for the pick when I was switching from finger to pick style while playing the song.

Interesting approach, especially on the upstrokes. I wonder how he keeps the thumbpick from launching across the room? P.S. who is that guy?
