leep's thread, "None of the cars I want are available with a manual transmission" got me wondering how many people can/do drive stick.

I do, and love it. I've only been driving for 6 years, but I've put 80K miles on my little manual transmission 1990 corolla in that time.

Nope.

I didn't even consider it with my current car, as I have a 70 mile commute, mostly in traffic.

I'd like to learn however.

I can and love it on the highway and probably would have it if I lived out in the sticks, but it really sucks in Chicago traffic. I drive an automatic now.

my V8 rover was auto and i liked it in traffic...but still used the 1.2.D sequence to get away fast at lights...

all my other cars over the years were stick...floor and column

it can be tiring in traffic but no probs with transmissions have occured...and you can get a push to start you on a flat batt...:)

The bad thing (well, ONE of the bad things) about minivans is you CAN'T get one with a stick anymore. My first one was an '88 Aerostar that had a 5 speed. It was da bomb...'til I got T-boned.

Been driving since '76 and well over half my cars have been sticks. I was really into sports cars for a while and all those were sticks. My fav was my 1980 triumph TR-8. A little V-8 in a light 2 seater roadster. Nice ride. I just got rid of an U.K. imported Austin Mini with right hand drive. Want to talk about something wierd, try driving a stick when you use your left hand to change gears!

Even today I've got really bad knee problems but my daily driver is a stick. For long hauls tho' we take the wife's car which is auto.

If you aren't shifting, you aren't driving! I've only owned three cars, two of which I still have, and two of them have been sticks. That plus a few motorcycles, if we're counting those too. My commuter car is my old Probe GT with an automatic, but my weekend car is a manual Sebring coupe. I don't ever want to not have a manual car, but they are getting harder to find these days. It's the best way to enjoy driving that I know of.

manual all the way. even with the 100m round trip commute thru traffic. uses less gas, cheaper car, and better control. easier to race ricers with.

oh, and to keep this on topic for bass, manuals have better tone. but you may need a preamp with that.

Here in Europe manual transmission is the norm... Most people over here get confused when there's only two pedals on the floor :D

Why should stick be a problem in dense traffic? You have a clutch, don't you? And a right hand?

My wife's car is an automatic & I can't tell you how many times I've totally slammed on the brake expecting there to be a clutch there. Sucks every time it happens.

If you've got knee problems like I do it can get downright painful. But as I said before I drive a stick every day.

Holding a coffee and talking on the phone while driving a stick in dense traffic really sucks. I do it every day too.

Allright, sorry man.

I can see that it's usefull if you have to do something else while driving in town...

But really, talking in the phone and drinking coffee while driving? Seems to me like a accident or two waiting to happen.

Eh, not when you're going 15mph... Plus the phone thing isn't a daily occurrence. I do drink coffee every day on the way to work though.

I've got a 2001 Audi S4 manual (6 speed :D ) that I love driving. I'm coming up on 100k miles on it :)

Traffic? Phhht, I drive in L.A. traffic and it really doesn't bother me.
