Ok, I've got a few effects, but they are so beat up they barely work and I need new ones. Should I buy a processor or a bunch of pedals. Well my real question is; "Should I buy a BOSS effects processor, OR an ElectroHarmonix micro synth, a Boss chorus and a cheap processor for delay/flange?"

I'm not really a fan of big effects processors. The only effect I use, and have ever used, is chorus.

A synth-bass pedal, and a phaser/flanger would be cool as well. I would say go with the individual pedals, but what the hell do I know.

Usually what I find with fx processors with 100 different fx's is that I usually only use 3 or 4.

I had the processors when I played guitar and now playing bass I favor the pedal route. I have an overdrive, chorus, and tuner. Id like to add a eq, phaser and a crazy distortion and then I will be pretty much set.

What type of music do you play?

I have an array of effects cause I play experimental/jazz/metal/industrial and i use everything that i have at one time or the other. I wouldnt go with an effects proccesor, But if you do, STAY AWAY FROM DIGITECH. The bypass on their pedals is not true, theres a very noticable delay, when using some effects, especially the whammy model.

If I were you, id buy the Boss bass chorus ($80), spend the 130 bucks on the Boss DD-6 Delay, or find one used, The DD5 and 6 are nearly identical, and you should only pay around 80 for a used one in good condition. Buy the boss guitar/bass flanger, Its only 100 bucks, Used its around 70. Im not too keen on synth's so that all i have to put in. Hope this helps.:)

I've had a couple pedal setups and a couple multi fx setups and I have to say the pedal setup is the way to go, for me anyways. I'm currently running bass>Boss Tu-2>Morley Pro Series II wah/volume pedal>MXR M-80>MXR Super Comp>amp. For the few things I need, pedals do it better, better tuner than most multi fx, better overdrive/distortion....etc.

I tested a Boss ME50B.

Pros:

It's all there in one package. No need for a pedalboard, myriad cables or daisy chain power

You can save your fave settings and call them up with out much fiddling.

Easier to keep track of the whereabouts of one piece of gear.

Cons IMHO:

There is not as much control over the properties of the effects as one would have with single pedals. (this could be a pro too. One doesn't have too many chances to make awful sounds)

Some of the effects are not that great. Though they're not bad either.

If you break it or it gets stolen, you lose all your effects.

======================

I went with single pedals also. I have a Boss CEB3 chorus and two Digitech units, Synth Wah and Bass Driver. Between them and the Spot power supply and short cables I have spent more than the cost of the ME50B anyway.:o

Does GC send you their catalogs? I just got a booklet from them today called "The Musician's Guide to the Best Effects & the Best Deals". Probably not the most objective source, but you might pick up some ideas from it.

Yeah, I guess I'll just get some pedals. Off to Sam Ash and their locked MAGIC CASES where only a chosen few besides employees are allowed to actually venture.
