Members conk97 Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 My band hope to start gigging in a few months but im unsure on how to break the ice of our 1st gig. Me and the singer said that I should come out and play inspector gadget on the bass and then go into the 1st song. You guys got any tips?
Members EuphoricGreyGuitar Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 my band has an intro that we loop before we play.
Members Jazz Ad Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 Be good and original but there's no need to turn into clowns.Don't talk too much to the crown but still have a nice word.Chain the 2-3 first songs with nothing but music. Show them who you are.
Members KeroseneTrewthe Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 Just do what you do. Be yourself. Dont try to be someone youre not. Be original. ...gettin' the picture. Play great first. Jump around second. Dont mix up this arrangement.

Members Prh19 Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 A short Intro of the bands name, "we are ________" And do the tightest tasteful song you have then follow up with a couple more, then maybe a short yack. Have fun and play for the songs. Best of luck Phil
Members Rippin' Robin Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 Scream "Drop your panties sir William, I cannot wait until lunchtime", then pop your marbles out, grin like a baboon who's having the poop of his life, then do the tightes, juiciest song of the set. Then introduce the band. You need to get their attention first, because in my experience no one ever listens to you until you've played a single note. The dropping and grinning part is optional, though.
Members Sagemonkey Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 Think of all the ways you shouldn't be starting off your show... Like spitting in the crowd and giving em the middle finger. Starting the show with vulgar talk /obcenities. Bringing puppets on stage and making them talk to the crowd. Starting the show without a soundcheck... Starting the show addressing the crowd that you're a new band and would really really be pleased that they didn't leave before the end. Ummm. doing this might help you think of things you might wanna do. - Start the show with Cannonfire like AC DC's for those about to rock (this part helps if you know the song...) - Start the show with Tom Sawyer. ( i.e. same as above) - Start the show like Kiss. - Start the show with a Harley Davidson on Stage and a coupla very cute women...(can you say flamebait?) ...either way, have fun... that's the most important, and remember you're guitarist prolly has more strings than you and more chances to f. up! Members tdempsey Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 if you know your parts, you'll do fine. it's just a gig, even if it's your first or your 10,000th try to have fun. let us know how it goes.
Members greenshag Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 we start our gigs with a 3 minute southern baptist sermon we lifted off of AM radio. people have no idea what to expect after that, them boom!!!....our first song. works wonders.
Members Fran da Man Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 Hire this guy to break the ice...
Members basshunter Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 In my last 2 bands, we never said a word before the first song. Just come up and play. Introduce yourselves after a few songs, IMHO.
Members bnyswonger Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 I think buying the ba ra round of drinks would definitely put people in your corner.
Members anothertxn Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 We do a loop of quiet noise while we change into the unis. Then we just explode into the first song. We never talk to the audience for the duration of the set and never stop playing...we write transitions into the set from song to song. From the second we start, it's pure death until the last note. Then we say, "We're SteerS, we have stuff for sale, thanks." Works well for us. EDIT: Odds are, the first show will be a disaster. It almost always is. Tte worst thing to do is acknowledge that fact...just keep playing through all the errors and such, and the chances are good most people won't even notice.

Members mrbigisbudgood Posted June 22, 2005 Members Posted June 22, 2005 "Table 14, your pizza is ready" Then start playing.

Sounds insane but I see it over and over again. Good advice so far; just say who you are and start playin'! And try to spare the audience the annoyance of plugging your web site and CDs between every_freakin_song. ( small pet peeve of mine ....yea buddy we heard you the first nine times.... )

If they are good enough for you to want to know their name, you will be there until the end when they say it. Time spent talking is time lost rocking.

Time spent talking is time lost rocking. Thats true, but how much time is really lost rocking by saying "We are ____ ____ " ?
