LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Canadian singer Avril Lavigne is reportedly marrying a fellow songsmith.

Us Weekly says the 20-year-old is engaged to marry Deryck Whibley, the frontman for the punk-pop group Sum 41.

Lavigne, 20, began dating the 25-year-old musician in early 2004. They had been friends for several years before that, the magazine said.

Whibley and Lavigne both hail from the same province in Canada -- Ontario -- and reportedly bought a home together in Los Angeles last year.

Us Weekly reported that Whibley proposed over the weekend while Lavigne was finishing up the European leg of her tour. Publicists for both musicians confirmed the engagement to the magazine.

What is it about this guy? I don't get why he dates all these top celebrities. There's richer, better looking, non-whiney, not annoying guys these girls could be easily dating.

Yeah. It made me want to post the 'Weird Al' lyrics for that song. So...

'A Complicated Song'

Uh huh ... extra cheese

Uh huh, uh huh ... save a piece for me

Pizza party at your house

I went just to check it out

Nineteen extra larges

What a shame

No one came

Just us eatin' all alone

You said, "Take the pizza home"

"No sense lettin' all this go to waste"

So then I faced

Pizza all day

And every day

This cheese 'round the clock

Is gettin' me blocked

And I sure don't care

For irregularity

Tell me

Why'd you have to go and make me so constipated?

'Cause right now I'd do anything to just get my bowels evacuated

In the bathroom ... I sit and I wait and I strain

And I sweat and I clench and I feel the pain

Oh, should I take laxatives or have my colon irrigated?

No no no

I was feelin' pretty down

'Till my girlfriend came around

We're just so alike in every way

I gotta say

In fact, I just thought I might

Pop the question there that night

I was kissing her so tenderly

But woe is me

Who would have guessed

Her family crest

I'd suddely spy

Tattooed on her thigh

And son-of-a-gun

It's just like the one on me

Tell me

How was I supposed to know we were both related?

Believe me, if I knew she was my cousin we never would have

dated

What to do now? Should I go ahead and propose

And get hitched and have kids with eleven toes

And move to Alabama where that kind of thing is tolerated?

No no no no no no no

No no no no no no no

No no no no no

I had so much on my mind

I thought maybe I'd unwind

Try out that new roller coaster ride

And the guide

Said not to stand

But that's a demand

That I couldn't meet

I got on my feet

And stood up instead

And knocked off my head, you see

Tell me

Why'd I have to go and get myself decapitated?

This really is a major inconvenience, oh man, I really hate it

Such a drag, now ... Can't eat, I can't breathe, I can't snore

I can't belch or yodel anymore

Can't spit or blow my nose or even read Sports Illustrated

Oh no

Why'd I have to go and get myself all mutilated? (yeah, yeah)

I gotta tell ya, life without a head kinda makes me irritated

What a bummer

Can't blink, I can't cough, I can't sneeeze

But my neck is enjoyin' a pleasant breeze now

Haven't been the same since my head and I were separated

No no no

I think the fact that she's 20 and engaged is more bizzare.

And yeah, there's plenty of non-whiny guys for her to go off with.

And I've heard that she doesnt actually write much of her own stuff (i could be wrong) so songsmith is a bit of an overcompliment....

Anyone else remember that annoying kid who invaded the Amp forum a few years back wishing to be a Sum 41 clone? One of the most intense clones in HC history methinks... the reason I mention this is because ever since then, Sum 41 have been totally tainted for me...

That kid was sum41truepunk. What an asshole!

"How do I get the distortion sound from Brown Sound, who we all love" or something was my favorite quote of his!

As for being engaged, my best friend and his fiance live together downtown in their own house. He's 6 months younger than me, and she happens to be a month and a half older than him. 20 seems fine for me, especially since it isn't going to last.

I gave it 17 months on eBassist!:)

From what I've heard, she does write almost all of her own stuff and is into the producing side of things as well. Apparently when she first got signed, she told the record company to {censored} off when they wanted to bring in writers. Pretty ballsy for a 16 year old Candian girl. Of course all of that could just be made up {censored} to make her seem harder core, after-all, she did first get noticed singing Shania stuff in a country band.

I think that she sets up the basics for the songs and then the instrumentation is mainly coordinated by someone who knows how to make stuff sound overly produced and overly slick. I read a quote where she said that creative control is a big struggle for her.

that makes a lot of sense to me. She ain't old enough / experienced enough to be that slick.

I'm not saying she isn't talented, but I doubt she's telling the session drummer how to play her song the way she wants him to. Call it a hunch.
