Members beam Posted July 1, 2005 Members Posted July 1, 2005 Spent the day doing what we call "Conservation Action." For those familiar with the Chicago area, we were over on Montrose Point and Dunes. There is an area of grasslands there called, The Magic Hedge. For most of the morning, we were pulling out an invasive species of Canadian Thistle that had made it's way down into the area. Prickly tall {censored}ers that you need leather gloves on to handle properly. The afternoon we were out on the beach/dune removing Cottonwood sprouts, and cleaning up trash. Hot as hell out there today, mid-90's with little breeze and no where to hide from the sun. Needless to say, I'm pretty beat, but it was a good day
Members bholder Posted July 1, 2005 Members Posted July 1, 2005 Cool, man, that's a good day. Neat article on the hedge. Gives one hope that not completely everything in the world is totally {censored}ed up.
Members Thunderbroom Posted July 1, 2005 Members Posted July 1, 2005 hey beam...who's the "we"? Is this an organized group of some sort or was it just a bunch of friends that headed over there. It's cool that you enjoyed doing this. I spent two days this week working in my yard and bitching about it non-stop.
Members oldivor Posted July 1, 2005 Members Posted July 1, 2005 I thought this was about the band, thank goodness it aint. And cool

The first and third trip went to the Montrose area, the second trip went to another preserve on the South Side. The Shedd does all sorts of environmental programs, our Conservation and Education departments are pretty solid. We also have teams that work on Great Lakes Awareness, Right Bite(what kinds of fish you should avoid for various reasons), and a few other programs. This one that we did is just one of a few that we do during the year. This time, we were working with the University of Chicago's Environmental Studies dept, and the Chicago Park District.
Members beam Posted July 1, 2005 Author Members Posted July 1, 2005 Oh, just though I'd kick this out. Coppertone: Shade 45SPF This is the only stuff I trust. Tried-and-true, I used this for 2 months solid when I was doing an Archaeological dig in central Alabama during July and August...8 hours a day out in the sun(it was strangely dry that year). Didn't so much as get a tan. Damn fine stuff, didn't fail me today either

It's very cool that you're working in a place that allows and likely encourages you to get involved in things like this. The college I work for maintains a tallgrass prairie and promote activities that help maintain it.

I really dig working there, It's been a while since I was around(mostly) like-minded people to myself That's pretty cool! Any college that supports activities where students work for the environment is ok in my book
