Many of you are undoubtedly aware of the circumcision debate. If not, there's a lot of debate about the necessity of the procedure.

This should add some fuel to the fire:

French and South African AIDS researchers have called an early halt to a study of adult male circumcision to reduce HIV infection after initial results reportedly showed that men who had the procedure dramatically lowered their risk of contracting the virus.

The study's preliminary results, disclosed Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal, showed that circumcision reduced the risk of contracting HIV by 70 percent -- a level of protection far better than the 30 percent risk reduction set as a target for an AIDS vaccine.

I'd think that with a quick tug and a carefully-placed rubber band, foreskin would actually prevent against AIDS?

Actually, and I'm sure you know this, the reason circumcision began was because it was unclean. Dirt and sand would get trapped in the foreskin and infect the penis, hence the Jewish ritual of cutting it off.

That is definately significant for countries like Africa. I still don't think it's enough to make it medically necessary here in the US. My husband and I chose not to circumcise our son (we feel that it is unnecessary mutilation) he will be well educated about AIDS.
