Don't speak German...

I'm fluent in Spanish though and proficient in French. Languages are fun :)

That sounds like a good deal on lessons. Hopefully he knows the best way to approach the teaching. Too many teachers try to just make their students memorize a bunch of stuff and particular phrases, so then the student has no idea how the mechanics of the language actually work and can't properly extrapolate how to express unusual ideas.

Interlingua? Esperanto?

You've confused me.

I love languages. I don't really know why, but I really enjoy learning them, and learning about them. I'm far from fluent in anything but english, but I've studied a bunch at different times, at different lengths.

I started with German, and really like it. It's close enough to english to have plenty of cognates (words that look and mean the same as ones in another language). I've taken a bunch of others in school, and studied even more on my own.

My latest interests have been esperanto, korean and mandarin chinese.

I highly recommend learning at least a little of another language, just for the brain-stretching goodness. It will make you think differently, and give you new perspective of your own language. Good times!

I'm not sure about spending money on hourly lessons though. I have spent a lot of time learning on my own, and I don't see anything wrong with it. I would suggest that you study on your own, with regular checkups with your friend. He can answer questions you have, and point you in the right direction. Books on tape, old (or new) textbooks, and even websites can be great resources for learning the basics of a language.

Have fun! And like I said, I'm far from fluent, but I'd be happy to answer any questions you have (about german, or any other languages you become interested in).

That's certainly true, nothing makes you understand your own language's structure more than trying to learn another. Best way to really understand english grammar I've ever experienced (though I still regularly butcher it).

Evey once in a rare while, I still feel an urge to restructure my English sentences more like they would be in German, kinda screws with your head!

:D

I take it you've never seen Better Off Dead...when I saw the thread title, I thought of the Japanese guy at the end impersonating Howard Cosell...

"Language lessons. Inspired words from a man...who knows...how to ski."

I used to be almost fluent in German, but haven't had a chance to use it much in the last few years, so most of it's gone by the wayside.

You're right, never heard of that movie. I thought I was going to have an esperanto-buddy. :(:D
