Members L-1329 Posted July 13, 2005 Members Posted July 13, 2005 I am still waiting for an email response from Warmoth, so I have a question for anyone who may know. Is it possible to get any of their four string bodies with the deluxe 5 neck pocket? I seem to be having a massive gas attack for a 5 string explorer. Also, has anyone ordered a complete body and neck from them? If so, how is the build quality and finish? I'm thinking that a five string Explorer, translucent blue over flamed maple, body binding, and a headstock to match with a satin finish maple neck, dual hum bucking jazz pups and a good preamp would be impossible to resist...
Members knuckle_head Posted July 13, 2005 Members Posted July 13, 2005 Fit and finish are good - if they say they can give you what you're after you will be pleased with their work. I've never been disappointed. It has been a while though. Have you checked into USA Custom? I don't know if they offer the flavors you seek but I like their attention to detail better.

I haven't heard of USA Custom, but will certainly check them out. Thanks...

Members Markee Posted July 13, 2005 Members Posted July 13, 2005 According to a most reliable source USA Custom is owned the son of the guy who started Warmoth. Evidently they had a major falling out in the mid 90's as to how to run the biz. At first USA Custom was vastly different but in no time at all it morphed Warmoth. USA Custom does supply a good many boutique builders as they pay particular attention to fretting and dressing. Both are excellent to deal with and offer a first rate products.
Members J. Posted July 13, 2005 Members Posted July 13, 2005 That's what I heard too. The version of the story that I got was that there was an issue about health insurance within the company. Apparently USACG is made up of quite a few ex-Warmoth employees.
Members knuckle_head Posted July 13, 2005 Members Posted July 13, 2005 They're both local companies and I have visited both joints. USA Custom was started by one of Warmoth's sales guys (the guy who sold me all my Warmoth stuff and quite the gifted guitar player) who thought he could do it better. He knows his stuff and has surrounded himself with some true talent. Warmoth is kinda the company that started it all. No bad choices...
Members DrSquirley Posted July 13, 2005 Members Posted July 13, 2005 I have a question, the bass necks that warmoth offers arnt standard fender size at the nut are they? -Alex
Members L-1329 Posted July 13, 2005 Author Members Posted July 13, 2005 Well I just called them and they said there's no way to get that body with a five string neck pocket. They say they don't have the CNC programming, and also couldn't do it as a custom job either. This sucks! I had this thing just about all spec'd out and was ready to pull the trigger on it. It can't be that hard to find a good fiver explorer, can it?
Members L-1329 Posted July 13, 2005 Author Members Posted July 13, 2005 I may have spoken too soon. Just got an email from the Warmoth custom shop. Seems that for an extra $110 I could get this made. Hmmm....

They may have the programming and be able to do it cheaper.
