Members L-1329 Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 Right. I have decided to go ahead with a Warmoth! The goal of this bass is going to be live playing, so I am looking for a great amplified tone and a flexible eq/pre. What I am going to get is a deluxe 5 neck with a body of alder with a flame maple top. I am going to use some stacked jazz pups yet to be determined. As far as the kind of tone I am looking for, I like a big, full and clear, somewhat modern tone. Don't laugh but I really do like the tone of the stack stacked Carvin jazz pups in my LB75. Maybe something similar, but with a little more character? I will be playing this through a Navigator, and also will be sometimes playing with a pick so I don't want to get the base tone too raw or muddy. I also want this bass to sound good and clear when playing it solo, and I will most likely be playing heavy rock to more popish rock. I am thinking of the Aguillar OBP-3 also. I just put a Bart pre in another bass, but I'm not sure that would be the best for this project. So, what would you all suggest for pups, and a pre? September will be the one year mark of my new job, and I am going to get this as a present to myself for surviving nearly losing my career, and suceeding at my new job for the last year. If I build this one piece at a time I can afford it. So any suggestions are much appreciated!
Members bassman1956 Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 Is this the Explorer body? What woods? Do they have pics from their showcase of similar items you can post? My one recommendation is to pay them to do the final finish that you want on both the neck and the body, unless you really like doing this stuff. My Jerzy's got the Aggie preamp in it. I love the sound! Doesn't seem to flavor the mix much, but, I don't have a comparable bass with a different preamp, so I don't know if this is correct.

I am going to have a ton of questions for you over the next couple of months! It is going to be the Explorer, and I am going to have them do as much as they possibly can on this one. I am 99% sure I am going with an alder body with a flamed maple top, translucent blue with body binding. The neck will be satin finished maple with an ebony fingerboard, and a flamed maple headstock veneer same trans blue. Gold hardware for full on pimp effect! Don't really have any pics, since I think I'm the only one stupid enough to to a project like this.
Members sheepdog Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 Aguilar OBP1 or OPB3 preamp (depending on if you want mid control on the bass) Norstrand stacked jazz, or better yet, the Nordstrand JJ pickups. They can even do some custom winding. Put a series/split or similar on the pickups. Definately worth taking a look. -edit- Nordstrand signature dual coil I think those would look great on that bass.
Members beam Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 $120 for a set of Sadowsky Jazz Humbuckers You can also find the onboard Sadowsky preamp on there too, though it's more pricey. I like what you are thinking with everything else!

You know, Nino Valenti just replied to me on talkbass suggesting exactly this! I'll have to see if I can get the body routed for those pups. Only downside is that if I didn't like them for some reason, I would have a real odd shaped route hole left over. If I stuck with a jazz shape, I could swap them out much easier... Decisions!

I know Warmoth said they could do Aero pickup routes (which should be about the same size). FWIW, my personal opinion? Vol (push/pull active/passive), Blend, Bass, Treble with parallel/single coil switches for each pickup (or whatever coil combination you want to use) or you could do a Fodera setup: vol/vol/passive tonebass/mid/treblecoil tap/coil tap/mid frequ switches orcoil tap/coil tap/passive switches that sort of thing
