Members DingoBlues Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 A question for the Chromes players... I just put a new set of ECB81 Chromes on the P-Bass. They sound and feel great. I should have tried flats a long time ago, the tone is much closer to the 60's R&B vibe i'm going for. My only gripe is that there seems to be a lot of oxidation - especially for a new set. I wiped the strings down after playing and noticed some black residue on the cloth. Is this normal for Chromes? I never noticed any oxidation on the XL-170's I was using up to now. Does anyone know if the outer wrap is stainless or nickel plate?
Members takeout Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 I think nickel. I think. Leave the oxidation on; that's part of the tone.
Members bikehorn Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 they didn't last super long before they died on me. but that was okay, because they sounded cool when dead too. i stuffed a sponge under ths trings on my P and with the flats, i got a decent Motown imitation happening.

Members Slats Posted July 15, 2005 Members Posted July 15, 2005 I had the black oxidation thing happen on my last set of Pyramid Gold flatwounds. They are nickel wound. It didn't last long and I determined it wasn't a problem. I think I wiped them about five different times or so. JMHO
