Members Groovin' Hippo Posted July 16, 2005 Members Posted July 16, 2005 The Bass porn thread has gotten me thinking.I like simple things.I like my one pickup bass.I would like to have an amp that had an "On" switch and a"Louder" knob.I see these (amazing/gorgeous/cool/whizbang) basses, and these (uber-tweakable/multitoned/super-flexible) amps, and I just kind of look at them and say to myself "what in the name of Pete would I do with all that?"Now, don't misunderstand, I am not bashing these amps or instruments in any way, nor am I bashing those who own and play them. Heaven knows I'm noone to bash anyone or anything.I have just realized I'm a "less is enough" kind of guy.Anyone out there have similar thoughts?

Mainly for the fact that damn near everyone in the jamband scene uses them. Turns out.....they rule, and although they are VERY tweakable, I run the EQ dead flat and never tweak a damn thing. Turn on, turn up, and play. My previous amps (all two of them....) involved months of dialing in and frustration. I've seen the light. Still trying to find time to review my new (and long awaited) VT-300.

I agree completely, though I like a 31 band eq for filtering. 4 strings, one pickup, and a couple of big speakers is all I need.
Members james on bass Posted July 16, 2005 Members Posted July 16, 2005 If I had the money to buy a whole new set-up (read-lottery;)) I would like to go simple. There is a nice pre-amp out there I like the looks of that is basically a volume, a tone and balanced DI. I also would like a nice bass with one soapbar, or a stacked jazz or something like that. A master volume and a stacked bass/treble cut/boost. I prefer simplicity, but it just never seems to work out that way for me.
Members SpaceGhost Posted July 16, 2005 Members Posted July 16, 2005 I'm pretty much the same way. However, I
Members Tlaloc Posted July 16, 2005 Members Posted July 16, 2005 Good amps dont need to pretend to offer 11 million tones. Personally, I like an input jack, volume, and 3 or 4 band eq, speaker outputs, and maybe an extra xlr line out.
Members sunburstbasser Posted July 16, 2005 Members Posted July 16, 2005 I like having enough EQ that I can get it to sound good regardless of the room. The 5 bands on my Ashdown and the 4 on my GK both did a good job of this.

I have a few toys that allow me to tweak and tweak some more. They are loads of fun but most are left at home. I find only a few settings that suit my taste and basically I leave them alone. Complexity has its place but simple is always better IMHO.

Members KeroseneTrewthe Posted July 16, 2005 Members Posted July 16, 2005 Doesnt Adam Clayton only use one string I wonder why he doesnt have a custom guitar with one sting in the middle of the neck.

It's a tube in a box with an input gain and an output gain, exactly what I was looking for. I modded my bass so it's got one soapbar in it. I was going to put in a 3 band preamp but didn't because I leave the tone wide open and shape at the graphic eq, not on the bass.

That's it, or do you have a large graphic eq? That is indeed a simple set-up. That presonus works well for bass?
Members Rob Martinez Posted July 16, 2005 Members Posted July 16, 2005 For me, simple is better. My first bass, which I still have, is a 1974 Rickenbacker 4000 with one pickup and two knobs and I love that bass! I do have two Waterstone 12 string basses, that's a lot of strings, but the passive electronics are fantastic! I love to just open the tone and volume knobs for both pickups and get a pure tone. Whatever you need to get the tone you want, that's the best set up!
Members beam Posted July 16, 2005 Members Posted July 16, 2005 I'm not totally wanting it that simple, but I don't like complicated either. I like basses with two pickups, 2 volume knobs, and a tone knob. On my amp, I like a simple 3 or 4 band eq(B-M-T or B-LM-HM-T), as long as there is a gain and a volume knob, I'm fine Luckily, I own exactly what I want...which is rare on this board
Members Jonny Five Posted July 16, 2005 Members Posted July 16, 2005 I've always looked at the bass as what it is: a four stringed instrument. You add all those fancy dials and knobs and you end up playing a bloody grand piano. I used to play keys, and man, four strings is so much easier

I rarely ever touch the eq once it's set for the room, but it lets me get the same tone I like no matter where I play.
