since its passive i feel its not even a clone

i did consider one because of price...but you get what you pay for...

i just spent two days listening to a MM5 being poured over my ears from rock, to funk, to mainstream growl...

 made my P sound terrible..

if you want the olp, i wouldnt expect that type of performance.

thicker neck (think warwick style in maple), crappy pup (the treee knobs control the volume, volume, and tone. the 2 volume each control half of the MM, and if they arent matched, you get an annoying 60-cycle hum).

That said, I think I'm getting one as a backup bass for my warwick FNA, but the first thing to go will be those electronics....

I have an OLP 5-String and I love it.

Playability not very good? I'd disagree... I play a hell of a lot more on my OLP than a lot of people play on their much more expensive basses.

There's nothing wrong with OLPs unless you're a gear snob.

I like the OLP MM5 but if I was to buy one I'd definitely want to go to a store that has a lot in stock so I could pick the best one. Quality can vary quite a bit from instrument to instrument, which is part of the reason why some people say they suck and others say they're great.

They're not the greatest basses in the world. You'll need a good setup done as well as putting in some better electronics.

Testing is pretty much required. The quality can vary so it's best to find one you're comfy with.

My MM3 isn't too bad. It did the job while I was saving up for something better.

I wouldn't call myself a gear snob. I've just never played an OLP that I've liked. I've played Rockbasses, SUBs, LTDs, and epiphones that I've enjoyed. I just don't think the sound is anything like a stingray. Good value, but you can't expect to get that Stingray sound. I've also found the OLPs that I've played to be poorly set-up. I'm sure with some modding they could make great basses, but stock, I'm not a fan.

Dark Slide,

Do you still have that mp3 of that classical song you played on the OLP? I remember it was some kinda crazy dizzy fast slapfest and it sounded awesome!

Can you repost that link?

There is stuff wrong with OLPs. They're just cheap enough to fix and still have a pretty inexpensive bass ;)

Uh, I have all my MP3s saved somewhere, but I am not sure which song it is that you're referring to.

I covered Classical Thump by Wooten, might that have been it? I did Fur Elise too, but that didn't have any slapping in it.

My OLP has some mods, and I am perfectly happy with it with no intentions of upgrading any time soon. Am I going to get a Stringray sound out of it? Probably not. Do I care enough about having a specific sound to bother trying very hard? Nope.

I wouldn't expect a stock OLP to be all that special... but then I have played a {censored}load of expensive basses off the shelf that ate dicks.

Incubitabus: I've never had the pickguard off... I've never had a reason to take it off. I bought it from a forumite and it was ready to play when I got it.

It may have been Fur Elise. If it wasn't slap/pop it might've been all the super fast triplets you were playing. It's been years since I heard it so I might be mis-remembering what I heard. I do remember it was a classical song though.

I wouldn't mind hearing your cover of Classical Thump too. :)
