Members Jonny Five Posted July 24, 2005 Members Posted July 24, 2005 Show review! I'd love to go see them, but they aren't in my neck of the woods...
Members Dragoon Posted July 24, 2005 Author Members Posted July 24, 2005 Erm, it was at the Quest Club in Minneapolis. Opening/warm-up acts were The Reaction (dunno, but the singer reminded me of Iggy Pop, vocally) and Jason Loewenstein (of Sebadoh) and his band; pretty much straightforward punkish rock with a little guitar tomfoolery in there. Some dude kept yelling 'Loewenstein!' between songs which was pretty funny. These bands each played 45-minute sets. Dino was supposed to go on at 7:45 but came on a few minutes after 8, meanwhile the place got packed and absolutely {censored}in' sweltering. My lady friend and I were about 10 feet away from one of the PA stacks when J, Lou and Murph came on and launched into the first song (don't know the title, it was probably off the first album which I don't yet have). Anyway, the volume was insane and I felt the force of the guitar and drums in my chest; it was so loud my keys were rattling in my pocket. Crazy. I was about deaf in my left ear after they played 'Sludgefeast,' during which the crowd completely lost its {censored}. I thought the place was gonna fall down around me. Gear-wise, J. played a couple of Fender Jaguars (Jazzmasters?) through a bigass Marshall stack (2 amps, 4 half-stacks) with some crazy distortion, wah, and flange, while Lou rocked a sunburst Ric through what I think was a biamped setup--a Marshall and Ampeg (?) head through two of those new Fender 8x10s. Great Lemmy-ish distorted/overdriven tone. Murph sounded great on the kit too. They played for about an hour and forty-five minutes, including two two-song encores. The band was obviously in good spirits too, especially Lou and Murph, and had a good rapport on stage. Which is cool considering how they split the first time around (if any of you have read their chapter in Our Band Could Be Your Life you know what I'm talking about). J. even talked to the crowd. Easily one of the best concerts I've seen, I just wish we'd have stopped and picked up some earplugs Setlist in no particular order and only songs I could identify (also only from the first three albums): Budge Bulbs of Passion (ROCKED) Forget the Swan Does It Float Little Fury Things (1st song of 2nd encore) Just Like Heaven (1st song, 1st encore) Kracked Sludgefeast The Lung Raisans Tarpit In A Jar (played the beginning of this one earlier in the show, stopped, played something else instead, but came back to it later) Lose Freak Scene (everyone went ape{censored} for this one too) No Bones Go see them if you get the chance! This lineup may not ever tour again!

Members zachoff Posted August 16, 2005 Members Posted August 16, 2005 I'll bump this one because J is my single most influential musical figure ever... And the closest they're playing to me is Vegas. Seriously... They need to play a Denver show. Dads like me with no vacation time at this point in the year can't travel.
