Anyone have a music resume?

And if so, what headings did you use?

I'm trying to put one together - figure it will come in handy if/when I start looking for studio work or teaching gigs a bit more seriously.

I've tried googling a few, but they all look radically different... :o

Thanks in advance!

This is the resume that I send to personnel managers in professional orchestras in order to get them to invite me to auditions. It's simple and gets the point across. It should be as close to a single page as is possible. When looking through possibly hundreds of resumes, no one wants one that is several pages long. Include only things of a professional nature when listing your experience. No one in the professional world cares that you made all-district band when you were in the eigth grade. Hope this helps. If you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks Bassius!

I note that neither of you put a list of records you've played on. Any particular reason why? Is that something anyone will care about?

Also, what about jobs that are not directly performance-related, yet provide experience in music-related fields (for example, working in radio). Worth noting? I know how to do a resume in the paperwork/desk jockey world, but I don't know exactly what music folks look for in a resume.

Thanks again!

all the records i'm on aren't really notable...that's why i put that i'm a Freelance recording artist...i've done TV video games, comercial radio, movie scores blah blah...i think if my res was geared toward music performance as opposed to teaching it would definitely have those details...i think that your resume should be set to show what people want to see. *shrug*

I would agree with Bassius on tailoring your resume for what you're applying/auditioning for. My resume that I posted is for orchestral auditions. If I were looking for a teaching gig, I'd note the following as well:

Teaching Assistant - University of Louisville (2005-Present)

Horn Instructor:

John Hardin High School (KY)

North Hardin High School (KY)

Central Hardin High School (KY)

Marion County High School (KY)

Louisville Male High School (KY)

Jeffersonville High School (IN)

Notable Beginnings Music School - also trombone (KY)

Ballard High School (KY)

Mason High School (OH)

Christian Academy of Louisville (KY)

Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Music Academy (KY)

Music and Arts Center - also piano (KY)

Private Instructor for 10 years

Freelance electric bassist and vocalist in the Louisville, KY area

I'd put all this stuff into chronological order, but I'm typing off the top of my head. I'd also include the work I've done/am doing in the ministry music-wise (church choir, youth praise band, children's choir).

In listing all of this stuff I've probably ventured beyond the helpful realm and into the "hey look at all the crap that 've done" realm. Unfortunately for me, I'm relatively insecure about my accomplishments, so I tend to do this kind of thing. Sorry. But, again, I hope this helps.
