Two pickup sounds

Because I haven't played a good bass with more than one pickup for any period of time. Soon I am having my techie fix the pickup switch on by bass so that I can coil-tap and combine the pickups.

What kinds of sounds can I expect out of different coil-tap combinations?

The bass has two Bartolinis; a neck Soapbar (dual horizontal coils) and a MusicMan MMC also with dual coils. All passive with push-pull pots and a 3 way switch.

On MusicMan alone I get:

- MusicMan sound

- Jazz like sound

- Ric like sound

On Soapbar side I get:

- Kinda P

- Kinda slightly less P

- Whacky 'guts ripped out of it' P

Any clues?

Coil tapping which is actually coil splitting results in no more hum elimination. In ideal situations it also gives humbucker & single coil sound choices. In most of my experience the sound diff though is marginal except for introducing hum with coil split for single coil performance. Best results in my experience have been with the neck pup haveing coil splitting switch. Cause in bridge pup it just makes it little thinner sounding. Whereas for neck pup it helps eliminate some bass so gets a little more balanced sound from neck pup. But again in most cases I've tried, sound diff is minimal except for hum added.

So the conclusion I've reached is that very few humbucker pups are capable of real single coil sound when split.

Thanx, but it doesn't really answer my question :)

To clarify, currently I am able to get single coil sounds I am happy with, as per my rundown of sounds. I don't really care how close they get to true single coil sounds, because I like them a lot and find them very usable.

My question is: what kind of variance I will get by using any combination of both pickups at the same time, compared to a MusicMan sound alone.

I use the MusicMan sound as a benchmark because that is the sound the bridge MM pickup creates. Everyone knows what a MusicMan sounds like, everyone knows what a P bass sounds like.

The two pickups are approximately 50-60mm apart. The P sounds are big and boomy, while the MM sounds are thinner with more punch.

Cheers
