Las Vegas!

Vegas in August? The Sahara has my favorite pool. Wet and Wild is a water theme park with water slides and concrete river that gets you around the park. (jump in and get carried around) Don't plan on traveling outside during the day. The locals keep saying that it's a "dry heat", but it's just too damn hot unless you stay long enough to get acclimated. On the plus side, Vegas is at 4000 feet elevation, so it usually cools down during the night.

I hope you enjoy it!

I was actually there last weekend on my small vacation and they don't even have half the basses that are shown on that picture. Also the only amps they had were SWR and a Ashdown MAG 300 that was it for highend amps and cabs. Maybe theywill have them stocked soon.

My wife and I are seriously considering a trip to Vegas from 8/8 to 8/12. Neither of us have been there. I'm scoping deals at Expedia and Travelocity.

For those of you that have been there, what do we need to know before heading out there? Are there places we should avoid? Is it necessary to have a rental car? Are the larger, "known" hotels a better deal than the smaller places?

Thanks!

I just went to Vegas last Thursday thru Sunday and I will throw my 2 cents in for what it's worth. I booked my Hotel and Air on Sun Country Airlines web site( Hotel.com is also just as cheap) I got my Air and Hotel for 2 for 3 nights only $719.00 that's including all taxes and fees. Now the Hotel that I stayed at was the Lady Luck Casino in Downtown Vegas and the area is not that bad If you want to see the Freemont Experience light show then you will have to go at night but the streets are covered with lots of bicycle cops and security officers. I also found a rental car place called Fox Rent a car and I got a compact for $110.15 for the 4 days. If you take the Fox rental, at the pickup location there is a booth that will try to get you to take a 21/2 hour tour of the Trendwest Vacation Homes. Take it and you will get $100 off your car rental even if you decline the purchase of a home just as a free gift. Most hotels you can't check in till 3:00 PM so this is a good time waster. Finally, go eat at the World Carnival Buffet at the Rio Hotel it costs $22 a person but they have over 200 food items to choose from from all over the world. If you want more info let me know as well.

The MGM offers a variety of restaurants from casual, moderately-priced, to (well, casual--vegas is always casual!) high-priced cuisine, including the famous chefs Emeril and Wolfgang Puck. There is traditional steak houses like Craftsteak (t-bone!) to sushi specialty restaurants like Shibuya (excellent scallops!) to Fiamma (very nice 'family-style' italian--great pork chops!) to Seablue (fantastic fresh seafood choices). These types of restaurants will cost you though, and how much depends largely on your course/menu choices.

I'd be sure and ask which tower my lodging was in at the MGM. The Grand Tower is the 'standard' room, which is nice and many offer a strip view. The West Wing is a long trek from the check-in (near 1,000 ft. by my estimation) and many of these rooms, althought finely appointed, offer no view due to construction at that end of the site. Mine had a drapery tacked tightly over the one small window in the room, and I requested a room in the Grand tower instead since I feel cramped in such a cozy atmosphere.

The monorail, though a bit of a chore to get to, offers transportation from MGM up the strip.

Treasure Island will offer a bit more strip interaction and excitement due to its location and the show outside. Dining options aren't as wide as the MGM, but that is due primarily to the sheer square footage difference! The rooms are nice and the location is great for anyone wanting a more 'all-hours' strip experience, imo.

For more reasonable dining, I recommend a trip over to the Venetian St. Mark's Square--a variety of nice little restaurants with a fun atamosphere of venetian street performers--magicians, jugglers, mimes, etc.

The many free shows on the strip are great entertainment--TI, the volcano at Luxor, I highly recommend the water show at Bellagio--it changes over the course of the day, so make sure and stop by at different times.

The botanical gardens at the Bellagio are a very relaxing atmosphere complete with rare plants and a butterfly collection! Don't forget the art gallery here as well as those in other resorts like the Venetian--some great collections.

Shark Reef at Mandaly Bay is interesting--runds about $15 a head. Cool up close views of some magnificent creatures.

If you like night-life and views, i'd highly recommend trying to get into the Foundation room atop Mandalay Bay on Tuesday--public night. The view down the strip is unparalleled anywhere else! A Moroccan-like atmosphere inside with draperies and covered walls--very cozy and relaxing.

Atop THE hotel at Mandalay Bay is a dining experience that is fantastic. It's pricey at $15o-$200 per couple, but something you'll always remember--Mix restaurant. The blown glass sculpture is something to behold.

Across the hiway, I'd recommend hitting Ghostbar atop the Palms. You can stand on a glass platform overlooking the strip and look down the 40-odd stories directly beneath your feet!

Lots to do in Vegas besides gambling--and then there's always day trips to see natures or the Hoover dam. Let me know if I can help out in any way.

Have fun!

PS...you might wanna check out the Wynn as well, there's a ferrari dealership inside! (and wynn charges you for everything, even have to buy a drink to watch his 'free' show) hehe

I'll be there for my first time on 8/20 or so, don't destroy the whole city before I can see it T-broom!

The only suggestion I can make is to go see the new Wynn Hotel/Casino. They do a light show in the evenings that is supposed to be downright badass. I think all you need to see it is to have a drink from the bar or something. Blurb in here about the attractions.

and going again in August...

Stayed at the "new" end of the strip but went all over. Stayed in the Mandalay Bay and Luxor... Doing The Bellagio this trip. Did the Dam (must see) and the cave paintings and the Valley of Fire. For all that you need a rental car. If you time it right you might get to see some boxing or a good frontline show....

You'll have lots of fun and spend lots of money even without gambling...

Da Worfster :D
