Members canadianriot55
My grandparents are giving me a pair of speakers from a stereo that they disassembled. my question is twofold. They are rated at something like 12 ohms at 12 watts, would that make them useless for PA system use? i'm pretty sure it would, but i just want to make sure. Second, is there a device that would allow me to send sound from my mp3 player to the speakers without buying one of those big things (possibly an amplifier?) that you usually find attatched to speakers of this nature? Members Emprov
Yep, pretty useless as PA speakers. And you're going to need some sort of amp to drive the mp3 player, any stereo that has RCA inputs should do the trick. You're probably going to need to score a 1/4" to RCA converter though. BTW, I used to run my Walkman CD player through my bass rig for learning songs, worked like a champ!
Members Deville
Those speakers are worthless to you as PA speakers. To answer the second half, For any speaker to properly function, it requires an amp of some sort.

Members Emprov
Look on Craigslist or ebay for an inexpensive stereo receiver or hit a garage sale or something. You should be able to land something that'll work for $10-$20.
Members jabney
hi canadianriot55, As PA speakers, probably of little or no use, (unless they are something like Lowthers in a properly designed horn enclosure). However, they might work well (or not) as instrument speakers when driven by something like a THD UniValve using a 6V6 or EL84 (in a YelloJacket socket adapter) as an output tube. If the magnet structure looks more like a soup-can than a lawnmower tire, that could mean the magnet is AlNiCo (which some of us think is a good thing). Do you know what brand they are? best, John
