Members DunedinDoug
I own a MIM Fender Jazz. (To make a long story short, I was filling in for a cover band, the guitarist was supposed to bring his bass along but forgot, and I had to run to the local music shop at the very last minute and buy whatever reputable bass I could find.) I find that I am playing bass more frequently now, and want a little different sound. I want more Thrumb and less Thonk, if you know what I mean. Should I upgrade what I have (different pups) or trade over to a different model altogether?
Members Emprov
Personally, I like to get a bit more fwamk in my tone. Stick with the MIM J as is until you decide that you're going to be a bass player.
Members DunedinDoug
OK, I've decided I'm never going to be a bass player. I just want the bass that I don't play to have a different sound profile. Upgrade it or replace it?
Members Emprov
There are quite a few things that affect a bass's tone -- strings (type and condition), cab, amp, pickup height, cables, condition of the body wood and neck, etc... It's really impossible to make any sort of recommendation when the only information that you've provided is that you have an MIM J and you want Thrumb and less Thonk, if you know what I mean. Be a little more specific as to what your sitch is and trust me, the opinions will flow.

This will make a HUGE difference in the sound.
