Members hurleysurf
I've kind of been into recording a lot lately and I was looking for a small little bass rig. I figure I'll just get a Standard Precision to record, but then I was wondering... How does the Fender 59 Bassman RI sound on an actual bass? I know everyone uses them for guitars, but they were designed for bass right? Just figured if I could have a bass amp that sounded great for guitar too (I mainly play guitar) I'd go for that. And definately used... And this isn't happening next week or anything. Just kind of researching now. I'm just wanting some opinions from anyone whose played a bass through one or if I need to be looking for something else. Thanks. ~N8
Members The Unknown
I was interested in those too while I was looking for a guitar amp to record and hoped to get something I could use as a smaller bass amp... I can't remember why but some people told me not to use a bassman reissue with a bass... I think, if I remember well, that the reissue speakers aren't gonna survive with bass but I'm not 100% sure of that... Depending where you live, it might be easy to find an old used Traynor Bassmate. An all tube bass amp available in combos that was used for bass and guitars back in the 70's. A guy I used to work with had one and loved it... he used it for both bass and guitar. The amp has a bass and a guitar specific input. And it would be lots cheaper then a used Bassman reissue. But stick around, somone here might know what's the deal with the bassman used with a bass... Members fretless
This is a great amp , but not the best for bass , it should be fine for home recording though at lower volumes, with it's open back and lower wattage speakers ,it can't move that much air with a bass , but is screaming loud with a guitar . I have played a Bassman Ten , silver face and this is more of a bass amp but still may be underpowered for some bass players .If you get this fine amp , you may just want to pick up an old peavey combo or something to gig with for bass .If you really want to use the same amp for gigs then a 100+ watt head should do much better , like a DR103 , SuperBass , or V4, SoundCity , or even a Bassman Head 50 , 70, 100 , 120 , 135 with a good bass speaker cabinet would do nicely
Members Kaesh
The 59 Bassman RI has guitar speakers in it. Not good at all for bass.

Hmmm...I do believe you're right. They have Jensen P10R's in them. Fender lists the amp on their site in the guitar amps section.
Members hurleysurf
Yeah... I wasn't too sure it was brought back for bass... Hah... Is a Bass Pod XT direct in for recording and straight to a PA for possible live playing a better idea? ~N8

Members hurleysurf
Do you have a recommendation for a nice combo then? Maybe 1x15 or 4x10 or something similar for around $500 USD? ~N8
Members Kaesh
An Ampeg B100R would probably be the most common recommendation.
Members Mudbass
There's a really nice 1967 Fender Dual Showman up for auction on ebay right now. I can't get the bloody link to work so you'll have to go fishing for it yourself.
Members fureybass
Also Traynor/ yorkville has some good bass combos in that price range. a 1x15 and 2x10 and not back-breakingly huge. I think they have direct outs, so they can be gigged pretty easily.
Members Cortfan
I think the Bass POD XT Live will be available soon. Excellent for recording, and thru a P.A. system. About $3-400.00. Great on your back, too.
