Going over to the states for a few weeks soon, will be finishing off in new york, where I hope to pick up a few things to take home!

Main thing on my list is a nice 4string bass, I would like to be spending $600-$1000, something that plays and sounds great preferably with a hardcase...

First question is what to go for...Id love (another) musicman (sterling or stingray), but unless i see a nice used one i think it could be outa range. Another one might be a fender Geddy Lee, love how those look, but never played one. Do fender make any good P/Jazz hybrids these days?

Second question is for the New Yorkers, or anybody whos been there...where is a good place to deal, somewhere to give a guy with an Irish accent a good deal :D , and has a good selection.

Cheers!

There's a Guitar Center downtown. Rudy's and Sam Ash and Manny's (which is owned by Sam Ash) are all on the same block on 48th street just up and east from Times Square. In my opinion Rudy's has really cool instruments and great help but their prices suck ass....they sell mostly to pros with no budget or tourists who are used to getting raped for music gear. Sam Ash is a cookie-cutter huge franchise and will have better prices, but there's nothing special to find in the NYC store any more....years ago the place was a gold mine of vintage gear. Now if they have anything old, they act as if it's the Holy F'n Grail and charge even more than Rudy's.

Oh, and Rudy's has 3 or 4 floors...just tell them what you're interested in and they'll send someone upstairs to unlock the room and help/watch you.

All things considered, GC will be your best bet for a great deal on an in-stock item. If it's rare and vintage, Rudy's.

I think the thing to keep in mind is that everything is more expensive in NYC....has to be, the cost of doing business there is astronomical. If you can visit virtually any of the stores in the surrounding areas of New Jersey, Connecticut and New York, you'll likely find better deals than the Manhattan shops. The possible exception is Guitar Center, which is new and still seems to be able to swing good deals.
