bass guitar into a guitar amplifier head?

No problem. The head won't care if you run a bass through it...or a Hammond B3 or a set of bagpipes either for that matter.

 

But the neighbors might kill you. :)

tube guitar heads are sweet for bass,

 

I got so much drive on my guitarists JCM2000 that i was getting feedback :) but it was fun. the do sound cool, but im still partial to playing thru bass amps, they have alot nice clean sound for bass

Yeah... I only have limited electronics knowledge, but I don't think there is much that you can damage on a guitar head. And while I've heard many basses sound sweet out of guitar heads, don't be surprised if some sound like dirt. Guitar amps are taylored for a guitar's frequency range.

 

Definitely be careful with cabs though. That is one piece of the equation that could get severely damaged because speakers do have frequency limitations to them. And since the general rule is, the lower the frequency limit the higher the price... guitar cab manufacturers will not waste money on speakers that can handle the lows of a bass.

 

Although, I played with a guy that played his bass through a Carvin (guitar) tube amp and a 4x10 guitar cab. Never blew anything up... but man, the sound he got from that rig was sweet.
