Members dv85150fan Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 i know the guitar cab will get damaged if you do this but how about damage to the guitar head . thanks for any replies in advance.
Members niftydog Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 cab MIGHT get damaged. It's possible to damage the amp, but probably less likely than damaging a cab.
Members Mudbass Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 No problem. The head won't care if you run a bass through it...or a Hammond B3 or a set of bagpipes either for that matter. But the neighbors might kill you.
Members der oxenrig Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 I play bass through a guitar head and it sounds marvelous. Lots of overdrive, but still enough bottom.
Members Sixgun77 Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 Ox, I've had the exact opposite in my experience, but it was a solid state guitar head. That might make a difference.
Members bassplayinguy Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 tube guitar heads are sweet for bass, I got so much drive on my guitarists JCM2000 that i was getting feedback but it was fun. the do sound cool, but im still partial to playing thru bass amps, they have alot nice clean sound for bass
Members sunburstbasser Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 Your cable doesn't carry soundwaves, only electrons. And an amp can't tell if they are guitar electrons or bass electrons, it just does its thing.
Members dv85150fan Posted August 4, 2005 Author Members Posted August 4, 2005 thanks for all the input. i just did not want to make a $900 OUCH, that would not be nice
Members Deacon_blue Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 I can't speak for SS heads, but tube amps are yummy.
Members PaulyWally Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 Yeah... I only have limited electronics knowledge, but I don't think there is much that you can damage on a guitar head. And while I've heard many basses sound sweet out of guitar heads, don't be surprised if some sound like dirt. Guitar amps are taylored for a guitar's frequency range. Definitely be careful with cabs though. That is one piece of the equation that could get severely damaged because speakers do have frequency limitations to them. And since the general rule is, the lower the frequency limit the higher the price... guitar cab manufacturers will not waste money on speakers that can handle the lows of a bass. Although, I played with a guy that played his bass through a Carvin (guitar) tube amp and a 4x10 guitar cab. Never blew anything up... but man, the sound he got from that rig was sweet.
