Members losergeek Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 I need a subbass generator. I've been using one on some of my recordings, a cubase plugin called "subbass" with a preset called "SquarePusher" in case any of you are familiar. You can here it in this last recording I did. www.thenervous.com/IMayNotBeRightButISureAmBeautiful.mp3 any ideas as to how to get that sound live? Thanks, Alex
Members Picker Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 Not sure what I'm listening for.... What does it do?
Members sludgebass69 Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 Do you mean a sub-octaver? Yes, there are several of those pedals out there.
Members megadan Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 I know there are at least two amps with such a feature built in. One of them is, sort of, the SWR 350x, which has a "subwave" octave down function. There is also another amp, and whose amps they are completly escapes me at the moment, but they have some sort of sub output that creates some super super lowness, just in case you have a spare 8x18 around somewhere...

Members the_big_geez Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 Behringer has what they call 'ultrabass'. It's built into some of thier amps, and is also in the effects section of the Bass V-Amp. Better have a cab that can really do 30Hz or less though...

Ashdown does that, and Behringer copied off of it. Try an octaver.

Would a "square wave" smooth out the tone? I thought that generally referred to unintentional solid-state distortion which is anything but smooth. edit: yes my SWR 350X has the subwave effect (as does the 550x and 750x) and it works good if I don't play below about the standard low A, below that my speakers start complaining.
Members rovito Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 Trust me. The Ashdown sub generator sucks.

Members sludgebass69 Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 My new Digitech X-bass synth-wah(lower left corner) does a decent sub down sound for a $70 pedal. (my out of control pedal board....for me anyways....
Members bassment zombie Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 Whatever you do, make sure to use whatever sub-harmonic/sub-octave effect you get, SPARINGLY. I heard a band last night...bassist was playing a Precision deluxe p-j with an all tube Sunn head and the matching Sunn 215 cabinet. He was using some sort of sub-octave effect the entire time. In fact, heard him fiddling around with it for a few minutes before the band started. It sounded like absolute mudd, and I'm sure the 215 didn't help. I think these effects can be quite useful, but try to be sure to use them in moderation. What may sound really cool to you when you're goofing off alone with these effects, can sound really cruddy in the mix.

Members lowbasslowbass Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 Try the Aphex Bass Exciter.

Alex I think it sounded good in the song - interesting and cool tune, for sure. By the way, I see you're in Mass...the band I was referring to (bassist with the overdone suboctave/harmonic jobby) played at T.T.'s...sounded like total garbage, and the sad thing is that his rig was a nice one.
