i am upgrading my bass, with a barts preamp.. i have to cut out a box for the battery... but my question is should the battery be away from the pickup.. i would like to put it under my pickguard.. but would that drain it or mess up the magnets? thanx

Some may disagree with me, and there's probably more that COULD be said than I will right here, right now, but I'd say don't sweat it.

9V dc isn't very much to deal with.

If you were putting a 120v ac transformer inside your guitar, you'd probably regret it, but a puny little duracell won't matter much.

Well i would be hesitant to do that, but i dont imagine the results would be too horrible. Magnetic fields, current, voltage, and inductance are all related. But im sure someone more knowlegeable will know.

Since the battery is mostly non-magnetic, it shouldn't affet the pickups field unless it is very close, and even then, since it is not moving it shouldn't produce any strange sounds.

And since it is DC voltage there is no chance of causing intereference (even if it were 300V DC ;) ), unless it is picked up by the wires-- and in that case, it is better to have the battery closer so it picks up less noise. It is the AC that causes inductance in wires and which affects low signal levels.

Great question. :)

I agree with geez.

However, if you want to know for sure, install the preamp but don't sink the hole for the battery. Then hook up the battery and plug everything in and listen for any noticable changes in the sound of the bass. You can also pass the battery close to the pup and listen for any changes in the sound. I don't believe you will hear any but that's the way I would do it to be sure.

I also agree with one of the other posts regarding the voltage. In the 9v the amperage and voltage is too low to have any deleterious effects. Moreover, sinking the hole will provide some coverage, not shielding exactly, but it will put a relatively thick layer of wood between the battery and the pups.
