SX Jazz bass question

I've been reading a lot on the forum lately that some people seem to think that the SX basses are just as good as the Fender MIM basses. I'm here to ask if you truly believe that. What I'm looking for is a no BS answer. Are SX Jazz basses as good as Fender MIM Jazz basses? Comparisons by people who have owned both would be a huge plus!

Thanks.

just as good, price is no consideration? No

50-75% as good, YES!

just as good, factoring in the HUGE price difference? No! They are better!

a guy here named Rick posted a recording of Rush's "Leave that thing Alone' that he recorded with his Essex and it was one hell of a testimonial.

I've had both. You can get dogs and gems from either. I think they're comparable.

Having recently purchased both for about the same price (a new SX SJB-75C and a used late 90's Finder MIM Jazz) I'd say the Fender is a better instrument.

There are some fit and finish issues where the Fender blows the SX away (like the nut for instance, the SX looks god awful). On other things, they are more comparable. The feel is hard to compare since this model SX has a different neck thickness / contour. As far as general looks, the SX kills the fender (natural with a maple neck and black block inlays)

The Fender was easier to set up. I could dial out the fret buzz alot quicker (and I went through several SXs at the store looking for a good one). Both sound okay, but I really haven't played them much plugged in as my rig is moving throughout the house and not currently playable.

I don't regret either purchase, but I wouldn't say the SX is the equal of the Fender. If you have time and can a Fender used, I'd give that a try. If you need something now, an SX will do a good job.

Stock, anymore, the MIM Fender is probably a little better in hardware and pickups especially.

If you are like most forumites and plan on changing stuff out, the SX quickly becomes the better of the two mostly because of the cheaper price compared to new.

But does the SX (any of them) use standard size pickups or those weird same size ones (like my late 90s MIM uses)? I've heard varying reports (and haven't measured mine)

It uses standard pickups sizes. I know...I swapped them myself. :D

Yeah, and if its a $120 bass, whats a little routing gonna hurt?

The finish (same as it would hurt on a $1200 dollar bass). Would you really want to refinish it?

Also, for the original poster, someone is selling a MIM jazz with aftermarket pups and a hardshell case for $250 in this thread

Nah, for a $120 bass I'd just take a little paint brush and dip some black around the routed area instead of refinishing!:)

I suppose that will work. That, or you could cover it with stickers... :)

Would you trust your SX to be a gigging bass? Will it stay in tune for an hour gig? Or an all night gig?

I'm trying to decide if I should buy an SX now, or wait two years and buy a MIM Jazz or USA Highway 1 Jazz. I can squeeze $100 out of my budget without the future wife noticing/caring much, but $400 is going to have to wait til after the wedding(which is where every red cent is going right now)

I've found that it's not so much the wedding that determines the starting point of not buying gear, but the house purchase. My wife was really encouraging when it came to buying bass stuff until we bought a house and now all the money goes to couches, chairs, end tables and the like.
