Members Perfessor Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 Good for you! I work afternoon shift and used to work about 1/3 the time on midnights. Anytime you can get away from those hours it's good.
Members Fran da Man Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 You're paid to play music in Church? I must be doing something wrong
Members pbass_groovin Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 congrats! A buddy of mine quit his sales manager job & started as a music minister at a 300 member church & loves it. He breaks out the electric g*%($! on sunday morning and rocks
Members B-Bottom Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 I had no idea that such a position even existed. Is it full time?

Members sludgebass69 Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 Hey NSP, how big is the church?
Members NSPBass Posted August 11, 2005 Author Members Posted August 11, 2005 Hey fellas. The church is about 150 right now, but I expect it to double in the next year or so and continue to grow from there. It's just a part time position right now, but that works for me considering I'm finishing up my master's and have an assistantship at school. By the time I finish school, it should be close to becoming full time. Yeah, this definitely involves a lot more than just playing on Sunday morning, even as a part time position. Right now, the church is still doing traditional music, so I pick out and lead all the hymns for Sunday morning and night, usually based around the topic of the sermon for each service. I also have to make sure the sound equipment is up and running correctly. I've also got to run through the hymns with the organist and pianist, and then run through the special music with whomever will be doing that. I rehearse the adult choir every week, and we'll be starting a praise band with the youth in the next few weeks, which won't be as bad as it could have been considering the youth minister used to play guitar professionally in a signed and touring country band. I'll also be starting a children's choir program soon. Over the next few weeks I'll be picking out a Christmas program for the adult choir to do which may or may not include drama. Eventually, I'd like to have a drama team doing stuff every couple of weeks, the adult choir doing something special every couple of weeks, the youth band leading every month or so, the children's choir doing something a couple of times a year, have several smaller ensembles (any combination of banjo, bass, guitar, trumpet, upright, percussion, voice) and soloists doing stuff every once in a while. I fully expect for my title to change from Minister of Music of Minister of Worship Arts and Media within the next year or two. Yeah, part time my butt. I'll be a busy little bee, won't I? All this, plus finishing a master's degree in music performance (french horn) and rehearsing and playing out with my band, northstar project. AND, I'll be getting engaged soon, but she doesn't know it yet. Busy, busy, busy. nspbass
