Members B-Bottom Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 to stop the rising gas prices? I mean it seems to me that since there have been no real out pouring of protest over these prices they will just keep testing the waters to see just how much they can charge for a gallon of gas. I read today that gas prices went up 40% since last year at this time. 40%!!!!!!!! How in the hell can that be justified? Not driving is not an option, we have to drive, that's a given. Not driving as much is feasible but I dont think that would really do anything to curb the rising prices. So who has some ideas on just what we can do....if anything to combat this epidemic. Oh and I'm tired of hearing the thing about how much gas is in Europe. I'm worried about #1.
Members zachoff Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 gas is an inelastic commodity so until regulations on price or subsidies on gas we're pretty much screwed. --edit-- Not that I want to see regulations or subsidies... I'm a free market kinda guy, but gas is one of those things where they can bend us over and charge whatever because we need it.
Members Mudbass Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 You might as well protest the price of BMW's. We as Americans have about as much control over that as we do the price of oil.
Members Undertoad Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 Well Bush just signed $286B in new pork barrel I mean federal highway spending for the next 10 years, so perhaps they will build a road that will go more directly to where you need to drive.
Members bassguy Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 as an american, you can start buying a smart car style car they may be ugly as sin, but still....they have good mileage or at least stop driving suv's and 6 and 8+ cylender cars (even though my 2 dream cars are dodge charger 69-70 rt, and buggatti veyron 16.4, 8 cylender and 16 cylender) but im seriously considering a smart car because they are cheap, and they save alota money on gas, and polution so if smart ever made a 4 door wagon, that wuold be my perfect car
Members greenshag Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 it is more than just driving, oil is used in the production of practically everthing we buy as consumers. Hell, the road you are driving on has oil in it...
Members Random Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 so if smart ever made a 4 door wagon, that wuold be my perfect car They do, it's called the ForFour.

Members ARES Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 use less oil, that's it. or stop voting oil tycoons in as president, that might help too.
Members sunburstbasser Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 The easiest way to curb gas prices is to use genetic engineering to create dinosaurs, then compress them into oil.

Members dert_stylus Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 How about drilling in Alaska and forgetting that the Caribou will go the way of the Dinosaur. If we drill in Alaska I am sure we will have enough resources to last us forever and a day. And b4 any Liberals start Crying all we need is about 10 miles of the luxurious Alaskan acres !!!

Per the White House's own estimate, ANWR holds enough oil to last us about a year and a half. That's if we keep current usage where it is now, instead of increasing our usage as we do just about every year. ANWR is welfare for the oil industry. Feel free to disagree.

Uh. . . actually, the oil pipeline has been credited for increasing the numbers of caribou. . . it seems that the caribou have a place to meet other caribou, or something like that. A study was done for the first five or so years after the pipeline was built. Result? More caribou.
Members zachoff Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 Why do they have to drill ANWR? It's like 1/10th the entire state of Alaska.

Well, yeah but I was going more along the lines of looking elsewhere in Alaska for oil... Seems like there'd be more places than ANWR. Why don't the Canadians drill too?

Edit: Not nearly half, but Canada is our number one foreign oil supplier.
Members bleepo Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 We do... Alberta supplies enough crude yearly to support Canada, if i'm not mistaken. There is a reason it is our richest province. edit: I did a quick search... "Canada ranks second largest in terms of global proven crude oil reserves (15% of world reserves), after Saudi Arabia."
Members Mudbass Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 Originally posted by zachoff Why don't the Canadians drill too? I don't know, good question. I can only guess it's because there aren't many oil deposits in Canadia worth going after.
Members zachoff Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 Originally posted by burdizzos The Canadians drill like crazy. We get about half of the oil we import from Canada. Dude, we should totally attack them too.
Members burdizzos Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 Originally posted by zachoff Dude, we should totally attack them too. Meh, we could just use less oil. I'm loving the high gas prices, this is the sort of thing that drives efficiency and new technology. It wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit to see gas prices hit $3.50 by this time next year.
Members BoundandBlocked Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 I always forget about Canada. Not too hard with them tucked away down there.
Members lug Posted August 10, 2005 Members Posted August 10, 2005 Originally posted by zachoff Dude, we should totally attack them too. No need. We could offer to trade them warm blankets for land much like the stunt we pulled to get Manhattan Island with the beads. I'm sure the'd fall for it.
