Any idea what this is about?

error.jpg

I am pretty good about virus stuff and I scan pretty often etc... but I am not sure why I started getting this message all of a sudden. Some of the programs I am trying to install shouldn't need DOS to run.

Any thoughts?

Did you install or let windows update to the DREADED service pack 2? That might be the problem. It's not recommended to install service pack 2 as there are a host of problems it causes but MS calls these problems "fixes". Typical M$ BS as usual....

What?

Anyway, what's going on is that there's a DOS-based program running somewhere... or a program that uses a DOS-based startup. We get the error at work for our fax program which runs when the computer starts up. FaxTalk Pro, I believe. Anyway, it's not doing you any harm if your stuff is working the way it always has.

Best bet is to check msconfig as has been said, or download HijackThis and see if there's anything unfamiliar loading up at startup. Be aware that msconfig lets you uncheck things and then re-check them if it wasn't the problem; HijackThis actually deletes entries, and the undo/recovery doesn't always work 100%, so if you're not sure what you're doing, either use msconfig or post a HijackThis log before you go deleting things.

Addendum: Head over to www.trend.com and run HouseCall (the free online system scanner they have). It should be on the main page somewhere. There's a few variants of a Downloader trojan that cause the error to pop up as well from corrupted system files. If that's the case, Trend will let you know you've got the virus and will clean it off; if you still get the error, do a system recovery with the XP disc (boot to the disc and hit enter, F8, and R in that order... you won't lose your stuff).

Thanks people.

I was going to try a restore from the XP disk, but I had to go to work and it would have taken too long.

I use Housecall quite often for checking for virus' but thanks for that suggestion :)

I think I am all set, I am just going to repair my windows from the CD now and go from there. Will update if I have any more issues.

Thanks again.
