Here we go then,

I have an 8 ohm svt classic quaddy, for sale is an Ampeg svt3 pro head with an hlf 4 ohm cab, can I join these 2 cabs together without damaging the head? being solid state, their should be a bit of flexibilty BUT?

with thanks

The Ampeg svt3 pro is rated at 450 watts at 4 ohms and is not recommended for use below 4 ohms.

A 4 ohm cab parallelled with an 8 ohm cab will result in 2.6 ohms, resulting in possible damage to the Ampeg.

I wouldn't do it.

That's not all that big of a deal, I did it for a while and it worked fine.

Exceeding the amp's rating is a proble.

Fair enough then burdizoss, my head told me so but I am going to miss out on what could have been a f****** good deal.

There's also the fact I have never played through a svt3pro and maybe fate has stepped in and stopped me buying something that is only average. yeah, wishful thinking.

Why don't you just sell the 8 ohm cab? The HLF is supposedly a great stand alone cab.

Or if you like your 8 ohm cab, sell the HLF and get another 8 ohm cab.

What I'd do!

Nah mate, he wants to sell it as a package deal and fair enough, I would do the same. Selling my own quaddy would not be easy it the relative small place I live in, besides my ideal playing situation is using 2 cabs.

My main reason for buying was the head, I have to replace the HIwatt I use now and find something that will come close to the tone I am used to, the svt3 pro seems pretty popular out there.

with thanks

Thanks Flod,

Yep, I agree with your ideas mate but the problem is selling where I live, the biggest buyers are the newbies and there is so much cheap stuff available now new, behringer for example, and try telling a kid about tone, forget it, but thanks for the ideas.

You could buy another 4 ohm cab and run the two 4 ohm cabs in series.

4+4 and 8 would bring you back down to 4.

Come on... you know you want to!

lol, well yeah I do, hey, I am learning heaps .

Now, I suppose I need a new thread, who would know best about moving from tubes to solid state and still get decent tone?

I think I will give that one a go.

It's not a great deal if it's gonna fry your amp.
