I really want to get back into a band again. Something like Camper van Beethoven/Cracker/Violente Femmes with some Velvet Underground and Who tossed in. Just laid back, mellow and fun. But... school starts up again in a week, and as of now I'm taking 17 units... School is a priority for me, which has worked out, I have a 3.7 gpa and over 60 units (I'm barely 19), but I feel like I'm just putting my life on hold when its in session. Well I am putting my life on hold, I haven't even had a date since December! I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips for keeping a group together with everyones tight and a varying scheduals.

i decided not to go to college for my band and well i had this girl i am really in love with who really wanted me to go to college but when i told her how i felt she only wanted to be friends i wonder if maybe i had a chance if i would have started college when she did last year instead of starting a band, we're still friends but i only wonder if i went even a year late what would happen her boyfriend just joined the army and she's kinda depressed i think i'll just invite her to my next show and try to console her....:D actually i'm not even good enough so ...... sorry about that i can't help it when i think about her i go all goo goo so anyways i skipped out on my edu to play music so yeah um that's what i did.

sad thing is i had almost a 4.0 in school and i never studied so i would probably be doing pretty good right now if i had went

you can do both, it just takes some careful arrangment of your schedule...

This past semester I took 16 hours of classes, kept a job (23 hrs/wk), worked in a lab (part of my degree), worked on my honors thesis for the other degree, and I managed to keep my band going...Then again, we only play 1-2 times a month and very rarely play overnight shows so I'm usually back in my bed that night or the next morning at least...

It's not easy, but as long as everyone's on the same wavelength you can make it happen.

ps- my band only practices once a week though to offset the scheduling issue...we practice for 4 hours or so on sunday afternoon/evenings...

Being in a band is easier when in college. YOu have more to do than you would with an 8-5 schedule, however your schedule is much more flexible, being much more conducive to the rock n' roll lifestyle of playing out late, etc.

DO BOTH!!!!

The reason I say all that is that being all tired at work doesn't really work, because you need to function. In school, you generally just need to stay awake and listen.

Think honestly about the amount of free time you have in school that you spend doing things other than studying. If that number ends up being fairly large, you have to know if you are willing to sacrifice a chunk of those to dedicate to the band. However, if you do not possess those available hours, then obviously you won't be able to do the rock thing. I'm currently working on an honors thesis while playing music, but I also have methods for getting by with spending hours with my head in the books. That isn't an option for everyone, so it really depends on what you believe you are capable of.

College while gigging is one of the toughest things you can try.

I've been doing it for the past 3 years, and it's taken it's toll, believe you me.

I met some people in Georgetown (about 30 min S of here) and we played every day that first summer, just practicing covers and playing small outdoor shows, etc.. But then the singer/acoustic guy and guitarist move up to Lubbock to go to school at Tech. So, they find a guy that can do some replacement stuff, but it's definitely not "Me". So they do that for a while, and then all the gigs we have closer to here I do. Had some of our best shows and best times ever travelling, but it usually always ended up being me driving to Lubbock and back over the weekends (11 hrs round trip), and never getting anything in school done. Grades suffer? Definitely. Break-ups in relationships? No doubt. But, it's all what's most important. I did alright in college (without hardly ever studying), but wouldn't of given up any of those shows or times with the band (good OR bad) for an extra few .'s on my GPA. You only get one life man. Grades are good and all, but college is about life experiences first off, IMO. A great disposition and common sense will probably land you a better job than someone who has a few higher .'s on their GPA. Plus, where's your stories? Where's your friggin' LIFE, ya know? Now I get to move into the world of balancing gigging with work. We'll see!

Live with no regrets. That's what I figured out a little too late in school, but made up for it since then... ;)

It can be done, ive managed to do it and so have the other guys in my band, the only hard time is during exams,

I work roughly 20 hours a week when in school and my band practices twice a week with gigs on firdays and saturdays, and the odd tuesday and thursday, Ive managed to keep a pretty good GPA too, but thats more of my problem than becuase of the music. It is possible. if you just want a band to jam with then by all means get one going, if you going to try and make it famous and tour, then you really cant do it.

but by all means, dont just limit yourself, college isnt just about school, its a lifestyle to live while you still can!

+1

Depending on what you are doing now, and what you did in High School, there probably isn't that much of a difference.

If you want to be in a band, it may take time away from other things. But that's life.
