Rene Lacoste was a tennis star way back in the early 20th century and he is arguably regarded as the first athlete to have an apparel endorsement. In his case it was the clothing manufacturer IZOD and they placed that little CROCODILE on the breast of the shirt in honor of Rene " The Crocodile" Lacoste.

Thanks for posting where the alligator logo came from. I tried one of their shirts many years ago. The artificial fabric felt awful, my skin hated it. Never another Izod item.
