Everyone uses Fender as basis on how to build electric basses. Its like a King fan putting down Kay. That's just silly. Your style might not fit with the tone that comes from a Fender, but saying that they suck is rediculous.

John Paul Jones dumb? No. Geddy Lee dumb? no. Jaco Pastorious dumb? No.

Name a great (electric) bass player who has never touched one.

Touched one? That's a little ridiculous. I've touched many Fenders but I've never owned one.

As for non-Fender users of note: Victor Wooten? He's primarily a Fodera user. Les Claypool. Lemmy. John Myung. John Pattituci. Flea.

There's plenty of names to chose from. Fender certainly is the largest seller thanks to marketing and name recognition. I admire their ability to market their product. It doesn't mean I have to like it, though ;)

les frequently uses an old fender jazz, you can see it in several primus and sausage videos. ;)

edit: whoops, somebody beat me to the punch.

Edit. Anyway, I'm going home now. Goodnight.

That's what I'm saying. We're talking about Fender, the company, not Leo Fender and his work. Two seperate things, IMHO.

Flea's playing Modulus Flea models these days ;)

oops, I haven't really seen or heard much of primus after Sailing the Seas of Cheese. Their last video I saw was My Name is Mud, back in the 90's. So I was wrong. Does he still mainly use his custom basses though?

I agree that Leo's innovations and Fender as a company now are 2 different things.

I don't agree that they sell so much due to marketing, but that's a highly biased opinion because I like Fenders better than anything else for bass or guitar. I love the way Thunderbirds look, but I'll have to get one with only 1 pickup in the middle, defret it, and throw some heavy guage steel flats on it and see how I like it then. My Brice Bird is ok, but I don't dig the 2 pickup sound. Same with the Epi's and Gibby's. Other than a highly customized 'bird I'll be sticking with Fender because I know I can quickly and easily get the sound I like from one.

I tried a Cort fretless once. It was a nice instrument, felt solid and was nicely finished.

Anyone know any basses that have the same neck shape and fingerboard radius as the Fender/Squire Bullet Bass? The '51 Reissue does. It's a thick neck with the same nut width as a squire Tele( I forget the dimension) and a 7.25 fingerboard radius. All maple. If y'all can point me to a bass with a neck like that I'd gladly give it a try.

Why not just look up the neck size/shape of the '51 on the Fender site and email Warmoth, asking if they make a similar neck?

These brands include everything from Squier to Lakland Skyline.

Ya know what, I completely forgot about that. They keep a low profile, though, as far as marketing goes.

Yeah, they don't market the Cort brand a whole lot, but the products are more used than just about anything. Cort brand's biggest marketing is basically word of mouth. Not always the best, considering that they were once basically the equivalent of today's Rogue.

Kate changed into a night gown, sleepy and tired after a long day. She wasn't a social person, and a bag of potato chips and CSI were her favorite companions. She tried watching TV, but decided bed was a better idea.

She didn't actually know Lydia, never met her, but finding someone on their deathbed in a park is still a rather unpleasant experience. Kate bought a gun a day later. She was regretting it now, she had no idea how to use a gun, had never even held a firearm of any kind before. She'd sell it back or pawn it off in the morning. She had Wednesday off. Yeah. That'd make her feel better.

It was a balmy night. Kate slipped out of her long night gown and threw on a tank top, and a pair of athletic shorts. Rather revealing, but then who was gonna be looking at her?

She slipped underneath the sheets and flipped the light off. She slept easily, and it only took a few minutes before her breathing was steady and deep.

But he knew she was inside. He had been trailing her from afar for a month. He knew she fell asleep quickly, that she walked home through the park, that she didn't have so much as a goldfish with her in her small house, and that she was probably already asleep since all the lights were off.

He also knew that her father had once gone on a business trip to Atlanta. Mr. Orealus was moderately successful, and his hotel was not one of the boutique resorts. His door opened to the outside.

While on his trip, one night, a woman came beating on his door pleading for help, for anyone. Orealus opened the door, shouted at her to go to Hell, and slammed the door. She beat on a few more doors, no answer. Then, a short, scream, and silence.

Turns out, she was Joan, sister of a trained killer. And her family was angry. He was especially hurt, as she was his big sister, always there for him. A shoulder to cry on, girl advice, they were closer than nearly any siblings. It sent him over the edge. It had taken him three years, but he found out who had killed his loving older sister.

Rather than kill him, though, he opted to take what mattered most to Mr. Orealus. And his only daughter was the perfect target. He had gotten too angry, made a mistake. But not tonight. There was only one person in the small house, he knew where she was sleeping, where she would lie for days before being discovered.

One neighbor had a Labrador Retriever. One had no animals in the back yard. He chose that side to enter the house, from behind to avoid being seen. Like a ninja, he made his way from shadow to shadow, as silently as when he had crept up behind Lydia.

It took him mere moments to pick the lock on the back door. In he went through the kitchen. He wore only a very thick pair of socks, to cut down on noise from walking. The living room. He made a quick check on the couch, and saw no one there.

Into a hall, and around a corner. The door to her bedroom was open. He hadn't been in the house yet, only examined it through windows and from the lights. This would be even easier.

What was that sound? A woman? She was moaning, groaning. What was going on? Was she...masturbating? He didn't know but decided against walking in until the noises had stopped.

In fact she was having a nightmare. Monsters around her. A rapist! He was on top of her, she couldn't move. He punched her!

And she awoke with a gasp. For no apparent reason, she reached for the handgun on her dresser. Her breathing was very heavy, and she was covered in sweat. She was scared, but it was just a dream. She then realized that she still had the gun in her hand. She sighed, and checked the safetey. She had learned that much about guns in the last few days.

She caught control of her breath, and calmed down. She wanted a drink of water. She wouldn't fall back asleep soon.

But he didn't know that she was now wide awake, didn't really know what was going on. No sound. He made his move. He unsheathed his knife and entered the room.

He had taken a few steps when he was suddenly blinded. He gasped, heard a quick rustle and a scream!

She had flipped her bedside light on when he was only steps away, not knowing he was even in the room. His gasp startled her to flip around, and seeing a knife in a big black guy's hand is always scary and a good cause to scream.

Her eyes adjusted quickly though, since the light was behind her. He wasn't black; he was covered in black but his skin was white, if fairly tanned.

She panicked. He took a step back, shielded his eyes, but it didn't take him long to adjust to the light.

"WHO ARE YOU!!?!??"

"Shut up woman!"

Kate didn't know what to do. She crawled to the end of her bed and tried to climb up it in a vain attempt to flee. She placed her hand on her nightstand-on her gun grip.

She just picked it up. Of course, he wasn't fazed. She was shaking so bad she couldn't pull the trigger, he was sure. Then a shot rang out, missing him by far but the sound of a gun going off is always a little unnerving when its so near. His moment of hesitation was all it took for Kate's adrenaline to collect itself and for Kate to get really angry, that this bastard would try to rape and kill her! She was steady now, and raised the gun at him again. He leapt at her, across the bed, to get to her first.

Kate pulled the trigger.

Her aim was poor, but it got the job done. One bullet hit his right shoulder, and as it knocked him back his hand lost its grip on the knife. He was too near to miss now. Two more thumped him squarely in the chest. As he was falling back, Kate pulled the trigger again. This one was a little higher, and his body a little lower. The bullet buried itself in his skull.

He was dead.

Kate wet herself. She cried. She screamed, and screamed and screamed. Finally, she grabbed the phone and dialed 911. She didn't know what she just did, what happened. But she called. And she somehow got out that she had just shot a man, and where she was.

Kate quickly changed her clothes.

Sixgun quickly fell off the couch as his phone rang and woke him from a slightly intoxicated slumber.

Wait a minute...your Fender neck has FOUR screws!?!? Mine only has THREE.

But other than that, I love it :p

It is not number of screws, but rather the setting of the screws. A four-bolt neck with slightly offset screws is supposedly more stable than a four-bolt neck as standard on Fender. I guess the 6-bolt Stingray neck is stable more due to sheer strength than design, but that works for me.

I've only recently heard this though, and I haven't verified it. I may be blowing smoke.

The 3-bolt neck is actually fairly stable. Its only a 2-bolt neck, though, as the third usually just holds the plate on. Anyway, if those two bolts are used correctly and put in correctly, it'll be as stable as a standard 4-bolt neck, or so I've heard. Again, I haven't heard this confirmed.

We'll see about the story.:)

Well, I have done that. Warmoth only makes 1 neck shape and radius for their bass necks. Modern C with a 10" radius. That's it, despite dozens of options for guitarists.

I first discovered this neck on the Bullet Bass, the first bass I ever owned. My next bass will be the 51 reissue. I don't think I'll ever find that neck all maple fretless from the factory, so I make 'em fretless after I buy them. Besides, nothing else is going to have that same fender tone. But if there is something out there that is as comfortable, I'd be willing to hear how it sounds compared to my Squire.
