Haven't been too impressed with the MIAs I've played, but the MIMs are a pretty good value for the money, especially the "higher end" ones (Geddy Lee, Active Deluxe, Aerodyne). Play what you like, and don;t worry so much.

Geddy Lee is MIJ.

I don't see what the big deal is about MIA Fenders, when for a little more I can get a Lakland Skyline. I've played maybe 8 MIA Fenders, of varying kinds, compared to one Skyline Joe Osbourn. The Skyline felt and sounded better than any of those Fenders did.

Ya know, Yamahas aren't bad. The feel is ok, and the tone is decent. I spent 4 hours in Mars Music before GC killed them playing every single fretless they had. This ranged from Yammy's for less than 200$ to Warwicks, Cort, Pedulla, G&L, Fenders, and a Carvin IIRC. I went with the 170$ Yammy P-Bass knockoff. I had 500$ for a bass. I liked the sound of that Yamaha better than everything they had in there with the exception of the fretless Fender P. I didn't have 800, so Yammy it was. It didn't have that good ol' fender shape to the neck, or quite the right midrange sound, but was very nice for the price. Still, IMO(there's that "subjective" bit again ;) ) nothing sounds as good as a fretless P series(be it fender or squire) with the right EMG in it. I've owned about half a dozen basses and I keep going back to big speakers and a fretless squire with an EMG. This is for everything from Ska to bluegrass, to metal to oldies or ethnic music. Fender does make several non P or J basses, but nobody I know of buys them because you buy a Fender for a P or J tone. Maybe style is the main factor. Most people I talk to who don't like Fender are people who play through 10's and usually either do nothing but "lead bass" or double the guitar's power chords. They invariably dump all the mids or dump the lows and jack the treble. Most people I know who like fender could give a rats ass about anything other than keeping in with the drums and staying in key. They keep the mids in and don't usually dial up any clanky highs. Hell, Fender was good enough for Jaco! Ever heard of Creedence Clearwater Revival? AFAIK most of their bass recordings were done with a Fender P through a Kustom 2-15. OK, that's all I can think of for now.

Haven't picked up a Skyline JO or DJ yet that I felt was even close to my Jazz bass. Not that the Skylines are bad, far from it, but for me, they're missing something. I really dig the 55-02, however, but it's not trying to be a Jazz bass....:D

But, of course, it's all incredibly subjective, a point that's lost on a lot of the posters in this thread.

I've been looking at the Skyline 44-02 as a bass to go with my black MIM Jazz but, like you, like it because it plays different tones, especially that big humbucker sound. When the Skyline tries to sound like a Jazz, the Jazz beats it hands down.

Who invented and patented (a copy of which is hanging on my office wall) the FIRST MASS PRODUCED COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR IN HISTORY. For that little feat, Fender gets a pass from me for ever. So what they're stuck in a time warp, who cares there are thousands of technically superior basses out there (some of which I even own) the bottom line is we'd have nothing to play or talk about had they not put that single coil in a plank of wood.

The origninal "what do you hate about fender" predates threadkiller by a long long time.

I've got nothing against Leo Fender. Hell of a genius if you ask me. He kept up, he improved his designs. Fender Corp. is the one stuck in a timewarp, and had little or nothing to do with the Precision bass circa 1951.

Give me something to write about. I'm not on par with Mr. J as a story teller, but I can come up with SOMETHING.;) Just need an idea, thats all.

I'll agree that Leo Fender was a genius, I mean he did come up with the stingray, but the dumbest thing he ever did was sell Fender. If he had kept it things would be totally diferent now.
