I have two main speakers given to me.

Each has a peavey 35W HF and almost new EV 300W woofer.

I have an old Peavey CS-800 Amp and a small mixer.

So I'm thinking about trying to turn them into a bass system.

Will this work and if so, what mods, etc. do I need?

Neccessity is the mother of invention.

Also you might want a rack case to put your CS-800 in, then you can start getting GAS for lots of different rack gear :)

I can't comment on the mains, but I would suppose they would work fine as a stand alone bass rig without any modifications.

The small mixer should work fine for a preamp.

Bass to mixer... mixer to amp... amp to speakers. You won't have a lot of control over your tone, but it'll get some sound pumping for you right away.
