Members 86mustang
I wanted to change the pickups in my bass. I have a fender p bass special (mexican of course, not be choice but $) and wanted to change the stock pickups. I would really like to get a nice midrange tone. I am trying to emulate the sounds of the bass player from CHIC. I would also like to get that "My Sharona" bassline sound. Which pickups would be suitable for the sound I have described above? Thank you
Members Benjamin
My Sharona? You need a Rickenbacker or a Jazz for that. As for P bass replacement pickup. Try a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder.

Members Benjamin
If budget allows you to choose Bartolini P/J combination that's a good one. Otherwise Seymour Duncan should have a P/J set. Do the research, look up their website.
Members Markee
I'd get the DiMarzio model P-J. It was the automatic choice of aftermarket bass PU's for years by recording and pro bass players....before the word boutique was used. They sound Fab-oo-less! Members illidian
+1 on the Dimarzio Model P/J set. When I think of the Dimarzio Model J, that song is what comes to mind. The Model P in there will work in place of the neck pickup, or maybe the Split P for more low end and less mids (the Model P has tons of mids, average bass and treble). Members beam
Dimarzio's are good, but I liked the way the Rio Grande's sounded better.

Generally speaking - clear but not punchy. You can get the punch from the rest of your rig, though. For a strong mid-heavy presence, the Dimarzio Model P/J set reigns as king. Aggressive and easily heard in a band. Approximation would be Geddy Lee-ish.

Never heard the Rio Gandes, but I love the Dimarzios. You probably can't go wrong with anything suggested in this thread.
