My heyday of shocking, anti-establishment, point-making, statement-living music are GONE!!!! what the {censored} is this business of every band eing EXACTLY the same, and all sounding like Pennywise/MXPX/Lagwagon-lite?!?!?! The new-school punk I knew was ground breaking and daring but this stuff is SOOOOOO formulaic, it makes Pop seem original. the closest thing to punk is THE WHITE STRIPES?!?!?! the world is off kiler and way too fat & happy. So much for music with a point and meaning beyond making money and screentime. Off I go back to Americana/country. You will find me at www.khyi.com if you need an infusium of real music. YES!!! You also can't forget to mention that Kate is pretty cute. We're going to be setting up shows with them soon. There are actually a good number of good, original punk bands from Indy, like Up! Scumbag, One Nation Under God, the aforementioned Two-Bit Terribles, Urinal Mints (ok, they're from South bend, but still...), Braindead, and one of the biggest acts to ever come out of Indy, Sloppy Seconds. Lighting Bolt, Melk the G6-49, V9R9D, and yes, Warm {ph}ilters(to self promote a bit... well that project falls more industrial overall, but...) are more in line with the punk aesthetic. Punk music is music made by punks. Punks don't really exist any more in the numbers to support a genre. Descendents are still rocking, are TSOL still back together?Melt Banana!!! A friend of mine who plays in a well regarded prog metal band asked me why I didn't like prog metal. I said it all sounds the same. Take a prog band from the 70's like U.K. or Yes. Did they listen to prog? No, there wasn't any to listen to....they were breaking new grounds. They had to take their influences from other styles.....there wasn't a formula yet. Who did prog bands of the 80's and 90's listen to? The prog bands that came before them. So, over the years, it got hymogonized (spelling?) and formulated. Same for punk. Of course the mainstream punk bands suck, they've sucked for the past 15 years, but if you dig a little deeper, you'll find a lot of punk and indie artists doing a lot of groundbreaking stuff. For example, here are some local bands from my area that just slay, fivemiledrive, raffi's children, tracer, the grey am(another forumite played bass in this one), forget flying, baby vs. giant, and I could go on for a while from here. They are playing at Birdy's with Burning Season this Friday. Burning Season is a pretty sweet metal band, we know their singer real well, he's got a real set of pipes on him. How can you sing about unemployment, being disenfranchised and other social issues when you grew up in a nice neighborhood in white suburban America? The music sounds like punk I guess. Excellent point! This could be said with all genres of music as why today seems to be very weak in originality, they're listening to things that has been already done and thus they sound overdone. When I got into jazz music it was by Return to Forever. Now, that band is Fusion, they were taking elements of Jazz and blending them with rock and created their own niche in that genre. If a group simply took them and started a band, they'd end up sounding like the Weather Channel music. But if you go back and listen to what jazz they listened to and all others in that genre and blended it with Rock of that era (Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson) you'd create something totally different from just taking one influence from them. And by that I mean, "we can't play our instruments, we still write songs, and we don't give a {censored}" is something everyone can identify with. Fusion is the perfect example- the first players took elements of jazz, rock, latin, funk etc. and created "fusion". The second generation of fusion players listened to fusion to base their ideas. Electro rock, "new"wave, noise-core, etc. Its sad to think that Hiphop is the only genre breaking ground and trying new ideas. Bear this in mind that I listen to non-commercialized authentic country and even my favorite bands/artists are gying south with the rest of the flock. Punk was something different, but now everyday you hear same {censored}ing riffs, no fresh ideas it become so boring...everything is based on well known formula I used to love punk, and I still do, but i didnt hear a good punk song for a years....
