Members canadianriot55 Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 go out and hunt for people around your skill level, preferably a little better, pester them till they let you play with them
Members Osmur Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 Well, after about 6 months or so of playing bass, I joined a band with people around my skill. It's been awhile since then, and I have become so much better, quicker. Playing in a band is the best way to learn. Go to a local music store. Some around where I live have boards where you can post "wanted ads". That's a very good way to find a band.
Members canadianriot55 Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 how many threads have you posted that are titled something like "stupid bass question"?

Ahh, don't pay attention to Canadians. They still think that things like free health care are good ideas. As for your question, my big advice would be this: if someone asks you to try out or fill in on bass, DO NOT make statements you can't back up. Be up front about your experience level and abilities, so there aren't any misunderstandings. If it works out, great. If not, just keep looking, and you'll find something that works.
Members DerekDRP Posted August 28, 2005 Author Members Posted August 28, 2005 aye . that be so cool if their where like bass fights ( like they do the rap fights ) lol. like in 8 mile but with bass and not a mic
Members baracuda2004 Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 i tried to learn by myself for about a year, and i got pretty good, but when i was asked to tryout for my band i saw my guitarist, shred like a mutha flucker i was like whoa, he a greed to work with me and now everyone keeps telling me i'm extremely good for only playing 2 years, but anyways what i'm saying is just find some guys to jam with, even if you don't really like their style learning to play different types of music well is what i believe makes a musician....good luck with the band thing man, oh yeah and i updated our website with a funny webcam mosh of CHOP SUEY, and HAPPY?-Mudvayne so check it out, Core Breach
Members Deville Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 Best thing you can do is lose the tab. Tab is a crutch, and will not help you learn music. It'll show you where to put your fingers to play a particular song, but what happens when the next song starts? If you don't have the tab for it, you're {censored}ed. Invest the time you'd normally put into tab into music theory. Learn notes, keys, sharps and flats, that whole thing. Tab is like the dark side of the force. "If you choose the quick and easy path, forever will it dominate your destiny..."
Members y-o-y Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 This is precisely why i started playing bass after trying guitar for about a year. when i finally got to the point where i felt comfortable enough to play guitar with other people i used craigslist to find some locals to jam with. i was very honest about my skill level, i think that is really important. when we got together (one other guitartist, a drummer and myself) i got steam rolled. it was kinda embarassing. the other guitarist had like 10 or 12 years of playing experience and was really quite good. he also has written a bunch of material that he wants to work out as an ensemble. the three of us seemed to get along together quite well, so i offered to go buy the cheapest bass i could find and have a go at holding down the low end. I figure one year of guitar lessons should be a lot easier to undo now then a few months/years down the road. [after all, i wouldn't want to be accused of being a guitarist who plays bass ] so last monday i did exactly that and i am convinced i can hang around the root and other chord tones and get by until i have a chance to get some bass lessons under my belt. the fact is, there are about 17 million guitarists in any given city and bout 5 bass players. finding people who will tolerate a less experienced bass player should not be that difficult...heck i got a group of people to let me jam with them on bass before i had ever even picked up the instrument!
