It might be part of it but it doesn't look like it's the entire reason:

At least 42 percent of daily Gulf oil production, 20 percent of daily Gulf natural gas output and 8.5 percent of national refining capacity was shut on Sunday, producers and refiners said.

U.S. oil futures jumped nearly $5 a barrel in opening trade to touch a peak of $70.80. The rise in oil prices fed through to other financial markets, hurting stocks and the dollar on fears that economic growth might be curtailed but boosting safe havens such as government bonds and gold.

Gas prices always go up around Labor day. This Hurricane along with it being Labor day is another reason for them to raise them like they are saying.

Yes, the two in conjunction might do it, but I thought you were just saying it was all because of Labor Day

Phantasm and any forumites who have family and friends there. I'm so sorry. I'm glad you got out and I hope you're still safe.

My drummer's Mom lives in Florida. She lost her front porch a couple of years ago to one of the other hurricanes.

I live kind of in North Tornado alley. I Lost an Uncle to the Pine Lake disaster 5 years ago. Natural disasters suck because they're so random. You think you have control over your life and then Mother nature ups and slaps you upside the head.

Did anybody see the interview last night with the woman, her boyfriend and little baby daughter who were going to ride out the storm on a shrimp boat??? I wonder how they are:( That had me up most of the night thinking about that little girl...

I feel bad for the other cities that got pounded (Biloxi, etc)... NOLA is getting all the coverage and the others pretty much got wiped off the map.

That said, premium just went up to $2.99 a gallon here as of about three hours ago at all the stations near my house. :(

GET OUT!!!

For those non-Cajun readers, Phantasm hasn't "got out" of the area. BR is only about 60 miles north of NO. C'mon, man, get away from there. I cannot convince my brother in BR to come take my spare bedroom. I will offer it to you, Phantasm, and Misses Asm (if there is one).

We are four hours north of BR.

Thanks for the offer, it's much appreciated. I ended up in Denham Springs during the storm and as you know by know, there were tropical storm force winds but the damage was limited to downed trees and downed power lines. There was barely any rain which was unusual to me.

We lost power in Denham so I went west to New Iberia and I'm at my sister-in-law's house posting this. My wife has been in Shreveport since Saturday so she's well safe. It was a complicated situation but we ended up getting separated due to logistics and then we decided it would be better if I stayed to go back faster if possible.

My house is in Gretna/Terrytown, which is on the West Bank. So far everything that I've read online indicates that area was very, very fortunate with no flooding (except street) and only downed trees and wind damage - an amazing feat considering that it's about 8 miles from downtown new orleans. Now I'm just hoping that when I get home there is a home and that it hasn't been destroyed by wind and rain damage.

My father-in-law is trying to get back now to see if we can access our property. We have two generators and plenty of gas if there is access.

I work for LSU Medical School in downtown N.O. and I know that area flooded pretty badly. When this is over, there will be an incredible amount of work needed to repair all the damage.

If I can ever get home and then get internet/power I'll post pictures of what I can get pictures of.

Could be, though that is usually reserved for countries that can't deal with the situations themselves.

Any idea how the homes in the Gretna area faired? I've got a stubborn 82 year-old Aunt there. I fear I may have lost her.

I'm sorry, I missed part of your earlier post. I see your home is there. I just got excited seeing you were from Louisianna and fired off a question. Any updates would be great and I wish you the best.

Where in Gretna is she located?

The councilmen for Gretna just talked on WWL-TV. They say that Gretna has not flooded in most areas, but it's still a total disaster. At least 90% of buildings are damaged, trees have been uprooted, and there are many downed power lines. Cats and Dogs are loose everywhere, there are snakes and other vermin running for high ground, and there are people looting grocery stores and convenient stores.

Most alarmingly, there is no drinkable water and no food to be found. That is the most dangerous situation of all.

If you are worried about your aunt, I would suggest calling the state emergency line and reporting that she may be in danger. wwltv.com has been one of the best resources for local info and you can stream their live coverage.

It's true and it's going to be a serious problem. They aren't sure what to do by the sounds of it, and if they leave it be then the water won't stop rising until it's level with Lake Ponchatrain.

:(

Yep, at least you got to see it as it was, because it sounds like it will be very, very different.

The major difference will be the required use of snorkling gear to see the sites. :(
