Good link with the Red Cross burdizzos

Just sent in my donation. I hope everyone is wrong about the estimates, and that it won't be as bad...but I hardly think that will be the case.

Hopefully those that can, have left; and those that have no recourse, seek out the best type of shelter they can find.

In the aftermath, sanitation could become a major concern given that the water has no where to go..

Well, congrats to Thunderbroom for getting to see it while it was still there...

Seriously, thoughts and prayers going out to everyone in harm's way...

The other "real problem" isn't just that NO is under water level, that wouldn't be as much of a problem if the surface temp of the water in the gulf wasn't 90 degrees F or higher - the Atlantic is much colder, once Katrina passed over into Florida and got into the gulf, it was like throwing gasoline on a fire...

So, there are still folks out there who don't believe in global warming?

Actually, most of the best science will show you that the current temperatures of the Earth are within the same ranges of previous global warming events.

While I think that the continued disregard for the environment that humans tend to have will catch up with us, I don't think we have already sealed our fate.

Please provide some scientific evidence to back up what you said. There isn't any.

Dr. Gray in Colorado says we have been in an era of reduced frequency of hurricanes the last 25 years. Now we are in a cycle of increased frequency.

God be with those in the Big Easy. Let's just hope they have something to go back to. The levy's are only designed to handle a Category 3 storm.

so....do we just not care about Cuba? I'm really wondering if the storm hit them hard or not. Was it not built up as much so it wasn't an issue, or is the fact that NO is facing total destruction completely due to being below sea level.

Looks like they got it bad, but not as bad as the US is likely to see

Cuba has begun cleaning up from Hurricane Katrina, after 8,000 people on the island were forced to evacuate flood-prone areas.

Telephone lines and power supplies were cut in areas across Cuba

Yup. I got out yesterday, over to the Baton Rouge area. I should be good except for wind damage (hopefully.)

Even people that "never evacuate" are leaving for this one. They've been saying for 30+ years that a Cat 5 storm would leave the city under water for 6 months, and it looks like we're about to prove a lot of scientists either very right or very wrong.

My house is not on the east bank, so it's in better shape but if the storm continues on the projected path the chances that my house will flood are highly likely. Wind damage is also a possibility. I picked most things of value off the ground before I left, hopefully it's high enough.

I'll try to post any pictures or whatnot that I can take after the storm, as soon as we get power/internet (might be a w hile...)

It was only a Category 1 when it went through Cuba.

On a positive note, the pressure is rising and the wind speeds are dropping. With any luck this will be a Category 4 storm when it hits.

I can't believe global warming got dragged into this and cited as a reason for this storm's power. There have been several storm more powerful in the last hundred years, but hey damn the science, full agenda ahead.

Have you ever seen NOAA issue a report that sounded like a Speilberg movie? I don't even think I can remember them using a "!" before now.

PHANTASM!!!

GET OUT!!!

For those non-Cajun readers, Phantasm hasn't "got out" of the area. BR is only about 60 miles north of NO. C'mon, man, get away from there. I cannot convince my brother in BR to come take my spare bedroom. I will offer it to you, Phantasm, and Misses Asm (if there is one).

We are four hours north of BR.

Thank you. I've been wondering for several days when someone was going to post the Katrina and the Waves reference.

Now - which one will do more damage, Katrina or the waves? My bet is on the waves with the flooding and all but I could be wrong.

I heard about this this morning. They said gas may shoot up 25 cents a gallon by the weekend. I'm sure that it's all because of the Hurricane and has nothing to do with the fact that it's Labor day weekend

I wonder how many people are true aethieists in the midst of something like that?

Was that really a necessary comment? Do we really care?

I'm just concerned about NO at this point.

I really don't think Labor Day is causing gas to go up $.25/gallon..
