Members Zeromus-X Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 If you're in that area... WTF are you doing here? Get out. This one looks bad! Latest discussion mentions possibility of Category 5 at landfall...

Members burdizzos Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 Holy {censored}! This is really going to do some damage.
Members NeonVomit Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 I'd be getting the hell out of any low lying areas like N.O.
Members burdizzos Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 This is going to be really bad. Katrina is now a solid Cat 5 storm with sustained winds over 160 mph. Just for comparison, Andrew had sustained winds of 165 mph at landfall and had a pressure of 27.23 inches at that same time. Katrina currently has sustained winds of over 160 mph and a pressure of 27.02 inches. Landfall is one day away, so this storm will only grow stronger. This could be the most destructive hurricane EVER.
Members Zeromus-X Posted August 28, 2005 Author Members Posted August 28, 2005 For those of you not familiar with the area, here's the main problem: NOLA is mostly several feet BELOW sea level. If the water pushes into the city, it's going to have nowhere to go. Last check, the hurricane is expected to hit almost directly. Usually the northeast quadrant is the most powerful, but in this case the hurricane turning more eastward would be just as bad -- the direction of the wind will push the water right in.
Members Zeromus-X Posted August 28, 2005 Author Members Posted August 28, 2005 Oh, and anyone who drives... might want to fill up the tanks before Monday. Good chance oil could spike up really, really soon.
Members Zeromus-X Posted August 28, 2005 Author Members Posted August 28, 2005 One more thing -- anyone with some spare time, check out WWLTV.COM, who is having a live broadcast of the storm. At this point, you can actually hear the ... fear? ... in their voices. Like they know that it's coming, and they know there's nothing they can do.

Members burdizzos Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 Pressure is down to 908 mb. If it doesn't start to weaken soon, this will be the most powerful storm ever to hit the US. For comparison, here's a shot of Hurricane Camille, the second largest hurricane to hit the US. Now, here's a shot of Katrina from that same vantage point: I wonder how many people are going to die because they were too stupid to leave.
Members NeonVomit Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 I thought Ivan was the most destructive hurricane ever...
Members baracuda2004 Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 well i live in northern Louisiana, Monroe to be exact kinda in the middle of the state at the very top so i don't think i'll be going anywhere, but i hope anyone who's too stupid to leave is really close to god or plans on getting that way like right now..... ohhh man just think about Hurricane ANDREW(the big one) back in 1992, i was too small to remember, but i think it did considerably more damage than IVAN did.
Members burdizzos Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 Andrew was the most destructive hurricane ever to hit the United States in dollar value. It cost about $36 billion*. Andrew killed just under one hundred people. Ivan cost about $18 billion*. It also killed over one hundred people. Ivan was only a Category 3 hurricane. Hurricane Camille killed 256 people, but only did $7.5 billion* in damage because it came ashore in 1969. * in 2005 dollars.
Members s4001 Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 It seems a few prayers and thoughts are in order for the NO area. Any forumites there, get out.
Members 1tallbassguy Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 I am watching the news broadcast suggested above. You are right, they are scared. Its like they are preparing for the destruction of their city. God be with them. I hope people get out, this could really destroy the city.
Members burdizzos Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 The {censored}tiest part about it is that this storm went from a category 2 to a category 5 overnight. There are over 100,000 people in New Orleans that do not own cars and lack the ability to leave. I hope the Superdome holds up.
Members burdizzos Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 Apparently FEMA already did a worst case scenario for NO. The scene played out a lot like it is right now, they speculated that nearly 40,000 people would die.
Members burdizzos Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 Holy {censored} is this scary! I wonder how many people who live in NO are actually aware of this study. I know for damned sure that if I lived there and I read that, I'd leave. A friend of mine from work is about to retire and his wife is already living in their new house down there. They have lots of money, so I'm sure she'll be fine. Click below and help those without the resources to save themselves. American Red Cross Donation Page
