Members HORSE Posted September 1, 2005 Members Posted September 1, 2005 Here's my two modified mexican jazz basses. The black one on the left is a fretless with Bartolini pickups (don't know which model, they were used with no numbers on them) and a modded electronics. I added a mini switch. In the down position, the controls are standard Volume, Volume, Tone. With the switch up, its Volume, Blend, Tone withe pickups wired out of phase so that when blended together, they act as a large humbucker (it sounds HUGE). The blue one on the right is fretted with Dimarzio Ultra jazz pickups. The the electronics are Volume, Volume, Tone with push/pull series/parallel pots on the two volumes. This bass is super versatile and kicks as for funk tunes. Oh yeah, both basses have Badass II bridges installed. WARNING: fairly large file attached

It's something I'd like to try myself. Can you point me towards a wiring diagram? I'm pretty new at this! Emre
Members SpaceGhost Posted September 1, 2005 Members Posted September 1, 2005 How does the tone compare between the two basses? Right now, I have Fender 60s Custom Shop pickups but they're not hot enough for my tastes. Did you get both basses and mod them or did you purchase them modded? If you modded them yourself, between the stock pickups and the pickups you have in each, what improved (obviously tone) in each pickup?
Members sludgebass69 Posted September 1, 2005 Members Posted September 1, 2005 Nice, I really like that blue color.
Members Gaui Posted September 1, 2005 Members Posted September 1, 2005 Cool basses, that blue one looks very good.

I installed the Barts after having American jazz pickups in the bass. The tone became a lot smoother and darker sounding (less harsh). Also, there is significantly less noise now. For the fretted bass, I bought it with the Dimarzios already installed, but I tried it beside a stock mexican jazz. The Dimarzios sound cleaner and a little smoother, but they aren't that much different until I pull the volume knob up (not sure if that puts it series or parallel). It beefs up the output and the sound. My favorite tone is with the bridge pickup soloed. Another interesting note is that the Badass II bridges significantly increase the tone and sustain. I replaced the stock bridge and what a tremendous difference! The only thing is that the Badass IIs need to have string slots filed into them by a professional for best results. (they don't tell you that up front)

I think I might head on down to the local music store to check out some basses with barts, I think I might make the switch and go for it since i'm looking for a "darker" tone. I've got some flats on my Jazz now and its got tons of booty.
