Kanye West on Hurricane Katrina

I don't have TV, but I just heard that on a commercial (on network TV) regarding Katrina, Kanye West said "President Bush doesn't like black people" and then they cut him off.

Anyone see this commercial? Anyone know how this has affected his career or what kind of repercussions it has had?

I couldn't believe it. A famous musician hasn't done something this controversial since Sinead ripped up the picture of the pope!

I heard about that as well. Apparently it only aired on the east coast, because the network cut it from the west coast time delay feed. However his sentiments are being echoed ALL OVER the news networks. General concensus is that if it were middle class white people (Bush's demographic) were the ones trapped, they would have had started relief the next day. But since is was mostly poor black people (not generally considered Republican supporters) the Bush camp wasn't in too much of a hurry.

 

The BIG thing is, if most of the US's millitary weren't in Iraq 'liberating' the people there from their homes, families, running water, electricity, etc.. there probably would have been money in the budget last year to make the necessary repairs on the levy that broke, and there would have been more National Guard forces to help out.

I saw it on the news , it almost looked like to me he meant to elaborate a bit , but instead his statement came off short , even Mike Myers seemed a little surprised , sure he is not alone with his sentiments , I think it's irrelevant at the moment , they just need to get all those folks to safety and then have a full investigation to see what and who failed to do their job .

the budget for the levees were roughly 40mil. doubling it would have been a drop in the drop. That money was gobbled up by some other state with a stronger lobby. (Don't look at us, CA got jack. Our representatives are not only corrupt, but can't even bring anything back from the pork barrel.) But why is all the criticism on Bush for it? I was under the impression that this was a Louisianna levee protecting New Orleans. Don't they have some responsibility? Long Beach maintains its own breakwaters and drainage and fisheries (ironically from oil taxes.) Why would it be Bush's responsibility?

Peopel, people, the last thing I was trying to do was spark another debate about GWB. I wanted to know what kind of repercussions this has had on Kanye's career. Sinead was flamed and hated (by most) for what she did. Her career was all but ruined (at least for the top 40 in US). What's happening to Kanye? Will he get dropped from his label?

I'm just hazzarding a guess, but I'll wager that he got hi-fives when he got back to the label's office. I doubt he'll be dropped. Now that NBC gave him all this name recognition, it'll be a boost to his carreer. No such thing as bad press, y'know.

I caught this live. I had no idea who Kane West was. I thought it was someone of non-celebrity (perhapse an evacu-ee).

 

His delivery was much less coherant than the transcript would suggest.

 

Myers really looked like a deer in the headlights too.

I can't see all that much coming from it, Jesse Jackson has been saying pretty much the same thing for days as well as others who are there.

As for Bush being racist, I wouldn't say he is, but he's most DEFINATELY a classist (ie: a lot of his policies/ideals benifit the upper classes the most). I think my wife was pretty accurate in saying that the reason the gov't was so slow getting help to the evacuees wasn't the fact that they were black, it's because they're poor.

I saw this as it aired. Kanye went off the script from word one! Mike Meyers didn't know what to think and yes...they did cut kanye off! But, that doesn't change the fact that Kanye is right. When palm springs had their hurricane last year the national guard and red cross where already on standby 24 hours in advance. And that was only predicted to be a catogory 2 hurricane! So why in the world did it take 4 days "post" hurricane to get anyone on the scene for a predicted catogory 4-5???? Hmmmmmmmm

Why don't you ask the governors of their respectve states? It's up to them, not the President, to mobilize their National Guard units. And the Red Cross is a non-profit organization, not a government agency, and doesn't answer to either the President or any state. It is also up to the governors to request assistance from any federal agencies.

 

You could also ask Ray Nagin why he didn't order an evacuation until Sunday.

 

Regarding delays, when did you start the clock? NOLA was not hit as hard as areas to the east such as Gulfport and Biloxi. It wasn't until Tuesday, when resources were primarily headed for those areas, that the levees failed in NOLA.
